Whenever seventy of the brethren buck the traffic to downtown Los Angeles for a midday meeting on the day after the New Year's weekend, cherchez le big attraction. This time, filling the banquet room of the University Club as competently as his boys had filled the Yale Bowl, the attraction was Tuss McLaughry, fresh from another East-over-West win at San Francisco and a coach's holiday at the Rose Bowl. Tuss looked fine, ruddy and healthy as usual, and his candid Saturday-by- Saturday review of the 1949 season made unusually pleasant listening. The presence of guests Red Sanders and Wilbur Johns, coach and athletic director, respectively, of U.C.L.A., raised speculations about a possible intercoast exchange of games sometime in the early Fifties. Both guests looked rather pensive at Tuss' crack that Ivy comes in three varieties: creeping, climbing, and poison.
Veep Howie Almon '22 worked up the showmanly announcements. Bobo Williams '26 and Dan Dinsmore '16 managed the Uproar department, music and cheers, with Bobo doubling as cashier with Veep BillAdams '34 when the regular gate guardians were delayed by traffic. Absentee president Cap Palmer '23 got bounced off his New York job in time to return home and preside, and had the privilege of presenting another panel of welcome new faces: Bob Reynolds '25, Warner Wilson '42, Bill Marion '44, HowardKresge '49, Tuss' guest Bob Aldrich, and a new father-son team to balance the Sandy Treats, the McMillans of '01 and '41. WillHays '31, who was responsible for those superb fishing pictures in the last two issues of the MAGAZINE, came up from Long Beach to shoot the affair for the archives.
While you're buttonholed, a couple of reminders. Treasurer Fred Fuld is sad because he hasn't gotten back as many dues envelopes as he sent out. Bill Adams needs those data postcards filled out and returned for the new edition of the Directory (if you've mislaid it, write Leon your name, nickname, class, business address and phone, home address and phone, and line of business or occupation.) Them as likes to ski should get in touch with Dave Boyle '40 at Hollywood 3961 or Crestview 64949—object: family weekend in the snow. And finally, if plans now afoot work out as expected, you will want to surely check in at the February dinner—watch your mail for the announcement of the event. See you there.
