WHAT is BELIEVED to be the finest Stephen Crane Collection in existence has been presented to Dartmouth College by George Matthew Adams, noted book collector, it was announced recently by President Dickey. Mr. Adams' gift to Baker Library contains all of Crane's books, together with several very rare volumes and letters, and numbers over one hundred items in all. It was made through the Friends of the Dartmouth Library, of which he is a director.
The outstanding items in the Crane collection are an immaculate, uncut copy of "Maggie" for which Mr. Adams paid $2,000, and a presentation copy of "George's Mother." Also included are a mint copy of "The Red Badge of Courage," of which there are eight different copies in all; an inscribed copy of "The Third Violet"; six different editions of "Maggie"; and four editions of "The Black Riders," including Hamlin Garland's copy with signed comment about Crane on one of the front pages. The latter book was dedicated to Garland by Crane.
Of the five rare Crane letters in theAdam Adams gift, the letter to his brother William is probably the finest personal Crane letter in existence. A letter from Crane to his girl friend, Amy Leslie, is also included. Magazines, reviews, clippings and articles about Crane round out the collection.
Mr. Adams, the father of George Matthew Adams Jr. '31, has been one of the most generous benefactors of Baker Library. Previously he has given the College his rare and valuable collections of Herman Melville, Joseph Conrad, H. M. Tomlinson, Katherine Mansfield, Walt Whitman and Richard Jefferies as well as many single items prized by book collectors.
