THE DARTMOUTH COLLEGE ATHLETICCOUNCIL closed its 1945-46 books with an operating surplus of $8,212.45, or $6,750 less than for the previous year, it has been announced by William H. McCarter '19, director of athletics. The net football surplus of $76,374 was $23,847 higher than for the 1944 season and surpassed by almost $10,000 the increased losses in other sports, but costs of administration and other overhead items more than counterbalanced this gain.
Operating income was roughly $35,100 greater than in 1944-1945, while operating expense was $41,900 greater. Practically every sport showed an increase in income (notably football, $38,700, basketball and hockey, $2100 each, and baseball $1300), but the concessions, with no big home games to pad the program and radio sales figures, fell off about $9,000. Considerable increase in salary, equipment, and travel costs were reflected in all sports. Administration costs increased $6,000 (almost $3300 of which was for the payroll) and the cost of the training room increased $3,000 as the staff was brought back to full strength.
The Athletic Council announced a net gain of $8,965 for the year and a net worth of $43,886. Of the latter total, $18,386.38 is in cash and $20,000 is invested with the College Associated Funds and is available if needed.
