A few hours prior to writing these notes I was driving to and from Woodstock, Vt., and for the pleasant information of classmates who are not privileged to see the autumn foliage in all its glory of color, I confess that while driving over the recently re-surfaced fourteen miles of highway between White River Junction and Woodstock, as smooth as a ballroom floor, I was well nigh entranced with the captivating beauty of the White River Valley, and the hills high above it on all points of the compass, brilliantly glowing in the mid-day sunlight of a perfect Indian summer day. I never saw such ravishing natural beauty before. At least, I was never so impressed with Vermont's autumnal beauty. As I recall it, only five classmates, or their widows, have looked upon Vermont's glory on this October day. They are Mrs. Carol Davis of Newport, Mrs. Tom Hack of Burlington, Rev. Homer Flint of Stowe, Albert Powers of Woodstock and Jesse Squires of Montpelier. On the sidewalks of Hanover, recently, (October 3) I met Prof-Emeritus Gerould. He informed me that our "Gerry" was 74 years old at the hour of our meeting. Thinking back fifty years ago who of us could then imagine that Gerry could ever be old? Classmate Ar- thur Forward Campbell was 74 the day after Gerry's birthday. Fred Cleaveland will be 74 October 24; "H Dan" Watson will be 76 October 31; Joe Ford will be 74 October 13; Tom Hack would have been 76 on October 24; Walter Lane would have been 73 October 22; Wm. Langmaid would have been 76 October 13; Henry Morrison would have been 75 October 7. It would take five pumpkins to provide our living October men with jack-o'-lanterns.
Walter Lane Jr., is a freshman at Dartmouth.
