A Dartmouth graduate turned violinist returned to his home town, Hanover, this autumn to show it what he feels about music and what he hopes to do with it in the future. He is Raphael Hillyer '36, son of Prof. Louis L. Silverman of the Department of Mathematics.

In his undergraduate days Mr. Hillyer was a Senior Fellow and showed so much promise that he was often spoken of as a musician who might devote himself entirely to concert work. He preferred, however, to play in groups, became a member of the Stradivarius String Quartet, and for the past four years has been a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Serge Koussevitsky.

Now on the faculty of the Juilliard School in New York City, Mr. Hillyer with three other instructors of the school has formed a quartet, and they hope to make their official debut after a series of practice concerts. They were heard in the Little Theatre in Hanover on September 4 and 5 with a large and enthusiastic audience listening to two concerts.

The members of the quartet are young—they average only 27 years. With Mr. Hillyer, who plays the viola, are Robert Mann, violinist, of Portland, Oregon, who studied at Juilliard and won the Naumberg award; Robert Koff, violinist, of Los Angeles, who studied at Oberlin and Juilliard; and Arthur Winograd of New York City, formerly a member of the Galimir String Quartet and the NBC Symphony Orchestra.

The quartet has not yet named itself and plays under the informal title of "A String Quartet Consisting of Members of the Chamber Music Faculty of the Juilliard School of Music."
