Was in Chicago for a few days; went to a Dartmouth cocktail party, but saw no one I knew. At other times, saw Reno, in and out 0£ Great Lakes. Went back to Macomb to try to decide where he'd practise law. Spent a couple of evenings with Stink and Lindy Davis et deux enfants, five and two. Stink is a plant manager with Montgomery Ward, and still looks capable o£ being Mr. Avery's bodyguard. Also with Cy and Wig MacKinnon, parents of three, and incidentally, it won't be long before the Davises are too. Borneman Was coming, but ran into some inventory troubles in Elkhart.
The youngest colonel to command an American regiment in battle in this war is 27- year old Victor L. Johnson Jr., Dartmouth '38 and a graduate of West Point. The colonel, who was in the Pacific since the beginning of the war and fought on New Georgia and Guadalcanal, won his eagles by leading his infantry regiment over the difficult terrain of the Caraballo Mountains of northern Luzon to dislodge the enemy from their last big stronghold in the Philippines. He stated that this battle was the "toughtest of any of them."
Bud Walls is still in Bermuda, and momentarily expecting to be transferred back to the States. Dune Dobie, now out of the Coast Guard, took the inevitable step with Dorothy Smith Fisher, Flushing, N. Y. Same vows for Nate Straus and Rebecca Smith, December 23. Bill and Joanna McMurtrie with son Jim are home in Indianapolis, and at last word the Sandy Mills entourage of Jenot plus son and daughter were with Sandy at the Kansas City Med. Depot. Morg Marshall is supply officer on the USS Mission Bay. Also reports arrival of daughter Karen, July 24. Not too incidentally, I've separated myself from the service, and at the moment am at loose ends. Hope to get to Hanover before too long.
