GID GRANGER,
April 1946 Herbert F. West Jr. (Aged 11)

by Robert Davis '03. Holiday House, N. Y 179 pages; $2.00.

Gid Granger is a seventeen year old red headed youngster, who like most boys, loved adventure. He lived on a Vermont farm with his mother and sister. One of the hands at the farm was a dimwitted dwarf named "Limpy," who in my mind is the hero. I liked also Half Pint Helper from Brooklyn.

Gid didn't realize what a time he was going to have when his brother Eben pushed off to an army camp and what a time he does have! Between the capturing of the giant bear, the fight with the bull, helping Link to regain his store, the foreigners arriving in town, the death of "Limpy" in Gran's blazing house, there is never a dull moment for Gid.

The author's way of putting Gid's adventures on paper are fascinating and exciting. After reading this book I think every boy and girl who likes farm stories will like this book.

A book of interest to Dartmouth alumni, recently published by Doubleday and Company is Passage to Glory, John Ledyard's America, by Helen Augur. Miss Augur, in preparation for this book came to Hanover to examine the Ledyard material in the Archives Room.

The book is a fascinating one, describing Ledyard's brief Hanover Days, his friendship with Thomas Jefferson and John Paul Jones, his experiences with Captain Cook on his last fatal voyage to the South Seas, his adventures in Russia, and his final days in Africa. Frustrated in his many desires Ledyard died when only thirty-eight. The book has several illustrations, including a reproduction of the Eleazar Wheelock portrait. A bibliography of six pages is a valuable feature. Miss Nina Brown Baker in a review of this book in the New York Times Book Review for February 10 says "Helen Augur, with a mountain of scholarly research behind her, has written Ledyard's story with tenderness and warmth. It moves swiftly, the underlying sadness sweetened by the quenchless zest of a gay and gallant spirit. The result is a noble and memorable book."
