Honored for Service
May 1946

Recently awarded the Abraham Lincoln Medallion for distinguished public service to New York City, Dr. Ernest L. Stebbins '26 has received unusual recognition for a long and varied career of public service. An expert in the field of communicable diseases, he has put his training into outstanding practice. As Health Commissioner of New York City, a post he has held since 1942, he has competently handled the health problems of that big city as well as keeping up to date its many research projects. In July Dr. Stebbins leaves his position as Health Commissioner to become Professor of Public Health Administration at Johns Hopkins University in the school of Hygiene and Public Health, and also to be Assistant Director of that School. Upon this important appointment, The New York Times in an editorial referred to this honor as recognition of Dr. Stebbins' "ability as an administrator, and the respect he deserves."
