Just back from one of our frequent saunters into Hanover and does that country village seem to be crowded particularly when classes let out or when you seek a parking space .... seems like more cars than ever up there but don't get the idea that they all belong to rich boys because we know more than one case where boys in the lower income brackets have them autos seem to be no longer a criterion of post-war wealth.
Seeing a packed Hanover sort of makes you want the old day of smaller enrollment .... but who in heck wants to have Al Dickerson's job of keeping it small while, in the process of selecting one boy out of ten, you see our sister colleges with their bulging sides as though they had eaten dried apples.
It beats all how Dartmouth men run across each other all over the lot.... Bill Tucker, eminent N. Y. barrister, met Walter Golde, 1910's Master of Music, on a Washington train in June, invited him to the Tucker summer home on Steamboat Island in Lake Winnepesaukee for a weekend, which was largely spent in reliving old days.... JackRichmond vacationed in Maine, became well acquainted with two Simpson families, the older, former registrar of Columbia, the younger, Dartmouth '32.
Allen Doggett lives in Cobleskill, works with U.S.D.A. Farmers Home Administration, office in the Agricultural Bldg. there HerbWolffs vacationed at Lake Morey.... Ran across Karl Maerker, wife and son in Hanover recently, all looked well, with son heading Dartmouth-ward.... Win Nay lives at 42 Regent St:, Roxbury, Mass..... Doc Foster says, "No hits- no runs, no errors. All is quiet as the 60th year of life looms on the horizon" ... .Don Palmer lives at 45 Farmlea Rd., Longmeadow, Mass Walter Price's address is 405 Carlton Ave., Brooklyn 5 .... Lenny McClintock, The Great, pens from 31 Tanglewylde Ave., Bronxville .... which reminds us that we should start signing up the gang for the next reunion in 1950.
Thanks to Art Lord, we are able to give you what the acting president of Columbia said about Frank Meleney's wartime work with the Committee on Medical Research:
"Dr. Frank L. Meleney has worked with great enthusiasm and effectiveness in a number of projects concerned with improvement in methods of controlling wound infections. He has served as executive officer of the organized program of study of accidental wounds in a dozen institutions, in addition to having conducted one of the most important units. Many new drugs have been investigated through his efforts including an antibiotic substance, Bacitracin, which was discovered and developed in his laboratory."
Through Easty's efforts, some consideration is being given to changing the name of the "Class Memorial Fund" to "1910 Class Endowment Fund" .... a suggestion which has some merit. Easty has been elected chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Soybean Processors Association which he organized
in 1930 and served as its president for five years. Easty is one of the real pioneers in the soybean industry.
Offspring.... Eck Hiestand is about as chesty a Grandpop as you find in the diggings .... "When it comes to grandchildren," says Eck, "We have no superiors in the Class of 1910. As you may know, all of our sons were daughters and they all got married quite young, and started having their children almost immediately. The present score for grandchildren is nine—four in Evansville, Indiana—three in Kansas City, Missouri—two in San Francisco, California. Beat that if you can!" .... Insofar as we know, no one can but some of us are in there pitching We had our No. Two in June, Peter Hinman Foley, a swell little gent who ought to make a good first baseman and end at Hanover 20 years hence The Larry Bankarts are expecting .... as are the Ed Raabes who yells to the world that he'll have a candidate for Dartmouth or Vassar very soon. John Washburn is studying Russian at the Russian Institute at Columbia University in N. Y His brother Wid is playing tackle on the Dartmouth varsity .... Howard Pierce works in Windsor, Vt., has bought a 75-acre farm there; his father, Earle The Courageous, is making a great comeback. For many years we have had a custom of picking up boys thumb- ing out of Hanover, carrying them as far as we go During the summer we picked up a personable youngster, were delightfully surprised to learn that he was Bob Kendall, son of our own Mac .... nice lad, heading into Dartmouth this fall.... Mac and family came East to see son David graduate in June.
Retirement.... The ranks grow—HeinieReed, longtime teacher of English and history at Stoneham High School, retired in May to enjoy his favorite hobbies of the piano and organ Howard Bushway is looking for a New England place in which to retire John Dingle invites everyone to say "Hello!" when passing through Dover, Delaware Dick Hursh wants to retire in this vicinity in the not-too-distant future As for myself, I know that I am very busy all of the time, doing mostly the things which I want to do.... and Larry Bankart (the Bankarts have a grand place in Norwich) just told me that the only trouble with his retirement was that he started it too late. In other words, he is having a lot of fun doing what he likes to do. Up in Palermo, Maine, Earl Nelson, longtime school teacher, is having a barrel of enjoyment.
Horace Eberly died May 26 Belated word has come through that Sumner Lloyd died Nov. 28, 1946 Freddie Batchellor died Aug. 24 Harry Floyd will write his obituary as he preferred to be listed with '09. ....Jim Ingalls' obituary was omitted from the October issue by the MAGAZINE because of lack of space but will, no doubt, be in this number.
Killie Nicoll got pictured in the Sept. 1 Life as a partner of Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Beane, "biggest brokerage firm" on the Chicago grain exchange.... 1910's Killie is grain department manager.
Andy Scarlett has been laid up in Dick's House for three weeks with sciatica .... we called yesterday afternoon and found him some better but the poor fellow has suffered a lot. Great guy, that fellow!
Fletch Burton is doing a grand job garnering news items for your Secretary.... his method of asking for items is a tribute to his interest in Class affairs.
Flash! Word just received from Ted Smith of Havana, "Am planning to attend Dart-Yale and Dart-Columbia games. If you see any of the boys, tell them to look for an old, worn out, gray-haired Tenner at either of the games and say 'Hello' to Ted Smith."
