ON THE NIGHT OF OCTOBER 10, 100 members of the Dartmouth Club of Washington got together for a cocktail-dinner affair celebrating Dartmouth Night, 1947. The main dining room of the Burlington Hotel was bedecked with a variety of athletic equipment on every wall which served as a general motif for the evening's program, which was dedicated to Dartmouth athletics and particularly to the 'D' men in this area. Master of-Ceremonies Oily Quayle '42 introduced some 40-odd members of the Club who are former Big Green athletes. Featured speakers on a program, which also included our everpopular Washington Quartette consisting of Chuck Grant '39, Joe Huber '40, Brad Cole '43, and Mickey Beall C & PTC '15, were two speakers who carried out the athletic theme. They were Dartmouth's great track star, Dr.Donald Burnham '44, who spoke on track at Dartmouth and paid a fine tribute to the late Harry Hillman, and Head Coach of Basketball Elmer Lampe. It was a long anticipated pleasure for us to meet Coach Lampe, who revealed himself as a clever afterdinner speaker in addition to his accomplishments in various fields of athletic endeavor. The program also included a review of the past year's activities of the Dartmouth Club of Washington as reported by Z. Mink Brook (alias Stirling Wilson '16) and read by X. Baker Tower (alias Barry C. Sullivan '36). In accordance with our Club's finest tradition, Dartmouth Night, 1947, was successfully concluded with a few words from Washington's Number One Dartmouth alumnus—Mr.Henry P. Blair '89, who, incidentally, was one of many 'D' men present—having won same as manager of the football team when an undergraduate. A barrel of thanks to Hal Leich '29 who, as Committee Chairman for Dartmouth Night, gave us a good time that will long be remembered.
Also on Dartmouth Night, the nominating committee presented its list o£ officers for 1947-48, which was accepted unanimously by the assembled club members. The line-up for the coming year is as follows: Percy H. RussellJr. '29, president; Herbert H. Harwood '26, first vice-president; N. Page Worthington '33, second vice-president; Lawrence C. Reeves, '33, secretary-treasurer; Oliver A. Quayle, 111,'42, ass't secretary-treasurer; Fred C. Pearce '15, Harold S. Fitz '23, Ralph D. Whitney '12, and Bradford D. Cole '43, executive committee.
With particular regard to this election, the entire Dartmouth Club of Washington joins in extending warm thanks to retiring President Hal Fitz '23. Hal has done a magnificent job for two years, and there isn't a Dartmouth man in Washington who hasn't appreciated his consistent efforts on our behalf.
More news—at our regular Tuesday Luncheon at the New Athens (12:30 P.M.—1741 K Street, N. W.) attendance has grown by leaps and bounds. This has surely been due in part to some swell programs. For instance, on October 21, we saw. and heard an excellent Community Chest Drive movie starring Melvin Douglas and a worthy cause. A week later, Nate Colwell '25, who is Chief of the Radio Section, U. S. Savings Bond Division, Treasury Department (everyone in Washington has a long title), presented a topnotch recording of "The Devil and Daniel Webster'' starring Edward Arnold.
And on the docket for the future are two fine events. One, on November 15, the Annual Dartmouth-Cornell luncheon will be held at the Roger Smith Hotel, at 12 P.M. HarrySemmes Jr. '43 is in charge of this party and tells us that the host Cornellians are going to have a play-by-play direct wire of the game featuring the program board of Johnny Pendleton '15. On November 22, there will be an opportunity for Dartmouth Club members to watch the Dartmouth-Princeton football game by television. We will be guests of the National Broadcasting Company at their studios at 14th and New York Avenue, N. W., at 1:30 P.M. Here again, arrangements have been made by Nate Colwell '25.
Yes—this has been a varied and busy month —and there are bigger and better ones ahead. So let's keep the weekly luncheon attendance on the continuous upgrade.
