According to an October 21, 1998, article in The Shore LineTimes (Guilford, Conn.), PeteMetz ran unopposed last fall for a fourth two year term as representative from the 101st District in the Connecticut State House of Representatives. Pete is particularly interested in the budget and is a ranking member on the appropriations committee, as well as being a member of the general law committee.

A September 18,1998, article in Hour, a Norwalk, Conn., publication, sheds some light on views held by class president Howard Greene, a Westport, Conn. based educational consultant. According to the article, college students surveyed prior to the publication of Howard's latest book, The Select: Realities of Life and Learning inAmerica's Elite College (Cliff Street Books), were asked questions on topics ranging from impressions of faculty, course work, social and political life on campus, competition, housing, food, dating, and alcohol. Howard was quoted as saying: "Every other business asks its customers how happy they are with the product. College students are not asked what they expected going to college and what they experienced. Students should be, especially when tuition is $30,000 per year." Among Howard's conclusions are that Ivy schools have more diversified student bodies than they did in our day, and that the "halo" effect of prestige associated with Ivy schools does not always give their students an advantage in the workplace. Howard's view is: "It is better for a student to attend a college that is appropriate academically, socially, and emotionally. A 'C' student at Harvard is not an advantage when a student could have done well elsewhere."

Dick Macht keeps busy as a guest speaker. The Southern Dutchess News (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) reported in its October 21, 1998, edition that he addressed the congregation at Temple Beth-El in Poughkeepsie (N.Y.) on "Jewish Humor: An Antidote for the Harsh World of Reality," illustrating the healing power of Jewish humor, and showing how it can help individuals cope in a rapidly changing society.

The Lawrence Ledger (Lawrenceville, N.J.) reported on October 29, 1998, that Tom Seessel had joined the firm of L.T. Callaway Real Estate as a sales associate specializing in commercial and residential properties. According to the article, Tom had previously been founding director of the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency, which finances single and multiple-family housing throughout New Jersey. Tom was also deputy commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. His career has also included positions as senior program officer of the Ford Foundation, and, most recently before joining Callaway, as president dent and CEO of Seedco, a private community development organization providing financial and technical assistance for commercial and residential real estate projects nationwide.
