WE ARE STILL shouting praise for the howlingly successful Christmas Luncheon. Our Cleveland Club turned out in force and once again demonstrated the depth and breadth of its standing as an alumni group. Much credit for this fine affair goes to our hard working president, Bill Steck '31, and Jack Gilchrist '35 and his Luncheon Committee.
The principal speaker at the luncheon, held at the University Club on Saturday, December 28, was Dr. Everett Baker '24. He gave us a stirring message on the true concept of a liberal education, and his talk had the double significance of a farewell to Cleveland, since he left for Boston a few days later to take up his duties at M.X.T.
The basketball team was present, having played Notre Dame the night before, and we heard from the new coach, Elmer Lampe. His position, following a record of 8 championship years, drew sympathy from all of us, but with his love for Dartmouth, we can count on a full-hearted effort to maintain this performance. Fellows around the class of '26 might remember his as one of the ends on Chicago's football team that rivaled our own as a powerhouse.
Our guests for the day were the prospective Dartmouth freshmen for next fall and their fathers. They will be interviewed by our Alumni Committee: Frank Heath '34, chairman, Jack AuWerter '35 and Eben Cockley '40 late this month and in April the College makes its selections. "Bud" Petrequin '25 gave them a short authentic talk on the operation of our selective system, stressing the impartial and strict application of our principles governing admission. About 60 prospective freshmen and fathers were on hand, 80 alumni, and 40 undergraduates.
The writing of this article is taking place between two of our most prominent events. The next activity of the Club is our Annual Banquet, January 22nd at the University Club, with "Pudge" Neidlinger as the representative from the College. The alumni attendance for the meeting is expected to top the showing at the Christmas Luncheon—this is the best chance of the year for seeing Dartmouth friends and hearing something about the "College in residence."
A few personal news items have come to our attention. "Hookie" Hagenbuckle '24 is reported transferred to Cleveland and we hope to see him at Friday luncheons soon. Sorry to hear that "Rog" Bury '27 is being transferred out of town, but hope that his brother-in-law, "Curt" Howard '34 recently back from military service, will be as active with us as he has been.
