DARTMOUTH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF THE PACIFIC COAST
MAY, 1928 B. L. Winslow '20

The annual dinner of this Association was held in San Francisco, March 2, 1928, at the Hotel Mark Hopkins. A record attendance of sixty-five were ready promptly at 7.00 p.m. to receive President Hopkins. Some songs and a cheer or two led by "Larry" Hewes Jr. '24 started the evening on its way.

The election of officers was rather short and definite, with the following results: R. S. Danforth '08, president; John R. Post '05, vice-president ; B. L. Winslow '20, secretary and treasurer. The entertainment committee was reelected for another year with one more name added: George C. Stoddard '18, chairman, Roy C. Frothingham '12, Elmer Robinson '14, (new member). The chorister, Prof. L. B. McWhood, was reelected.

The retiring president, Bill Washburn '14, acted as toastmaster. Mrs. Washburn had that very afternoon given much time in supervising the arranging of table decorations, and of course Bill felt quite at home. I am sorry that Mrs. Washburn could not have been a Dartmouth man just for that evening at least.

After a few songs Bill asked Roy Frothingham of the entertainment committee to give us a little idea of our activities for the past year. Roy was prepared, as he had already written a letter to President Hopkins just last week boasting of all we Californians had done so he read parts from the carbon copy. [The Editor regrets being obliged from lack of space to omit this letter.]

After this report Robert F. Leavens '01 was called upon to tell us about "Hoppy" of classroom days, and "Bob" did a real job. He assured us that "Hoppy" was "great" in college, and we all know how strong he is still going.

The toastmaster presented President Hopkins in rather a unique way, reading an indictment in which the president is charged with sundry grave offences. [We regret the necessity to omit this indictment also.]

"Hoppy" received the charges in the same good humor that he receives other criticisms. He disposed of all charges with the same good judgment as he has used with other critics. We need not go into detail on his message, as you no doubt attended your own alumni dinner. He satisfied us that our college, an historical college of liberal arts, is teaching men to find themselves and later to be themselves for life, a big job. We appreciated hearing of the building program, results of the selective process, and his honest opinion of the undergraduates of today. After realizing the standing of the present undergraduate one alumnus remarked, "Well, I am certainly glad that I entered in 1909; I never would have made it otherwise."

With Prof. McWhood leading, accompanied at the piano by Howard Almon '22, the evening was brought to a close with songs. It was the finest meeting we have ever had, and we were sorry for those who could not be present.

Among those sending regrets that they could not be with us was S. H. Jackman '60, the oldest living alumnus of the College, still residing in Sacramento. Page Junkins '14, now in Rochester, N. Y., always sends a telegram regretting that he cannot be with San Francisco alumni.

In addition to the alumni present there were a couple of sons, David Smith and Bill Wentworth, and a few fathers of Dartmouth boys; Mr. Chambers, Mr. Hyman, Col. Clifton, and his brother. Professor May, formerly with Tuck School, came in from the University of California. One of the most interested and loyal adopted Dartmouth men present was Captain Tom Smith, who piloted the United Fruit Company's ship that carried "Hoppy" on the Havana cruise two years ago.
