46 Sons of Dartmouth War Dead Eligible for College Aid Covering Basic Costs of Four-Year Course

ASA LIVING MEMORIAL to Dartmouth men who gave their lives in military service in World War 11, the Ernest Martin Hopkins Scholarships have been established for the benefit of their sons. There are 46 sons of Dartmouth's war dead who are eligible for tuition, room, and board throughout the four-year undergraduate course at Dartmouth. A few of the eligible Hopkins Scholars are beyond college age, but the majority are expected to become candidates for admission in the future. At the time of the retirement of President Emeritus Hopkins on November 1, 1945, the plan for establishing the Hopkins Scholarships was adopted by the Board of Trustees.

In letters to the widows of the forty alumni who are survived by sons, President Dickey wrote that this step to memorialize Dartmouth men lost in the war was taken in "tangible recognition of that sense of family which exists among Dartmouth men and between the College and her sons." The Trustees wish to have the presence of Hopkins Scholars on the campus provide a living reminder to future undergraduates that an earlier generation of Dartmouth men made supreme sacrifices for them, and they have wanted to make certain that the sons of alumni who died in military service are fully assured of being able to meet the expense of attending Dartmouth. President Dickey has also emphasized the desire of the Trustees to give recognition to the deep personal concern of President Hopkins for the fatherless sons of men for whom he cared so greatly, individually and as Dartmouth alumni.

The Hopkins War Memorial plan includes three major projects. A full description of the Hopkins Center was published by the ALUMNI MAGAZINE in December. An addition to the physics building, to be described next month, is the second of the projects and the Hopkins Scholarships complete the program sponsored by the Trustees and the Alumni Council. The roster of eligible Hopkins Scholars, with names and classes of their fathers, follows:

In the administration of the Hopkins Scholarships the following procedures have been established:

1. Those eligible for the Scholarships are required to meet the academic standards of the College for admission and for continued membership in the undergraduate body.

2. Award of the Scholarships will not be related to the need of those eligible who will be granted tuition, room and board. Hopkins Scholars will be recognized as an honored group on the Dartmouth campus in addition to being awarded substantial financial aid.

3. Recipients of the Scholarships must be sons of Dartmouth alumni, either graduates or nongraduates, who died in the military service of the United States or of our Allies.

4. Sons are eligible of alumni who died while on active duty during the period of national defense beginning with the date when Selective Service became effective, November 1, 1940, to a terminal date to be fixed by the Trustees of the College.

5. Regular application for admission is required of alumni sons eligible for the Hopkins Scholarships by the Director of Admissions and may be submitted in reply to a later communication from him. Meanwhile inquiries in regard to the Hopkins Scholarships should be addressed to the Secretary's Office.
