Your secretary is again spending the winter in Florida at Delray Beach, having left Portland January fourth in subzero weather with a snowfall of 19 inches and a drift nine feet high in front of his garage door. Had to keep chains on the car through Boston but on the third day arrived in Richmond, Virginia, and discarded coats and other warmer clothing daily until here I can lie on the beach for hours in only bathing trunks.

After many automobile trips down here I have become almost an authority on the routes from New England to the Southland. There are only three which claim to be the shortest, but by a few miles the Cape-Charles-to-CapeHenry-Ferry and coastwise route by beautiful Charleston is really, as it claims, the "shortest route from Pines to Palms." Next shortest is by way of the Pennsville Ferry to Baltimore and route 301 around Washington to Rocky Mount and 15A and 15 South. The route avoiding the big cities is: Parkways around New York, Hudson Tunnel, out thru Eastern Pennsylvania to Harrisburg (which city you pass thru rapidly) and 15 South or farther west the picturesque Valley and Blue Ridge Sky Line Trail. I have also found that staying at high grade motor courts, such as the Quality Courts in the south, is most convenient. Drive right up to your room. No taking the car to a garage and it is ready at once for an early start in the morning.

At the hotel here, I am having a charming time with Hayward Rolfe '04, Dr. StanleyWeld '12, Harold McAllister '13 and especially with Dr. Bob Smith of our own '02 and his lovely wife Anne. As I have written before, Bob is one of the founders and prime movers of "Alcoholics Anonymous" and the story of its growth and glorious achievements is inspiring, especially when I can dig it out of Bob in his own picturesque language. A physician has grateful patients but Bob has people coming here from all about who worship him. He has redeemed them from worse than death.
