Last winter your secretary at uxor (as Bob Smith loved to say) had a very delightful trip to Florida. One of the pleasantest parts of the trip was that we traveled South with Louis and Ethel Dow and their daughter Dorothy. Spending Saturday night with them at their charming home on Brattle Street in Cam bridge, we left Boston Sunday morning as Ethel had figured wisely that on Sunday the passage through New York City, the Holland Tunnel and over the Pulaski Skyway would be much easier, being practically devoid of trucks.
We stopped the first night at the Princeton Inn where we had a nice visit with GeorgeElderkin who looked young and healthy. George is still interested in the Basque country, has made a second trip to study their language and is yearning to make a third. On our way South, we spent a night at the Colony Inn, South of Richmond, Va., and one at the Georgian Court, North of Brunswick, Ga., and I can highly recommend all these places to any classmates automobiling South.
After a day in St. Augustine and a superb dinner as guest of the Dows at the Ponce de Leon Hotel, we parted company. The next day we made a side trip to De Leon Springs to see Roy Hatch. Unfortunately we just missed him but had a pleasant visit with his sister. I was sorry to learn it was true that the frost had killed most of his oranges. We stopped at Vero Beach to see the deluxe training camp of the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was their first day of training and Campanella was so stout he lagged way behind on their run around the field. They were put through a grand series of setting up exercises and their owner was given the keys of the city by the Mayor of Vero Beach. I rather pitied their new manager "Chuck" Dressen when I realized his job and how he would be criticized if he made a failure of it.
Traveling Southward we had five wonderful days in Delray renewing old acquaintances. Everyone spoke lovingly of Dr. Bob Smith who had spent a winter with us there some years ago and had organized a local chapter of A. A. George Bonghton at the Colony was happy that he was to have the honor of entertaining President Dickey at the meeting of the Dartmouth Alumni of Southern Florida.
In order not to be sued by Duncan Hines, I will defer until next month the tale of the rest of my trip and our visit to a superb spot on the Florida Keys.
