Fall is supposed to mean the start of a new academic year, but as an interested observer in Hanover, it is really hard to tell when one year ends and another begins. The four semester program creates some of this feeling, but a most interesting phenomena is the very large number of students who take very little time away from the College between terms. Hanover was quiet for about a week after the end of the summer term and then we observed an incredible number of students back on campus almost two weeks ahead of schedule. When we questioned a few most responded that they missed the place and were eager to get back in the swing of things again. Boy, have things changed! I for one think it's great. Maybe it is an indication of why the College is so unbelievably hard to get into these days. Because of this, many of our classmate's deserving children didn't make it this year, but those disappointments of the spring are now behind us and we can be happy for the 13 progeny of '46 who matriculated this fall. A look at the list indicates pretty good geographic distribution, but alas and alack - No Gals! '46 is surely out of step. Should the blame be put on the stork or the admissions department? Might as well pick on admissions as I am certain they are used to getting the blame. Anyway, we are pleased to welcome from the New England area, Ashley Chase, Jeff Butler, Mike Durham, Andy Farb, Joel Narva and Rufus Smith. From the East Central area, Gordy Daisley, Ken Loos, and Bob Seidel From the Midwest, Andy Heller, and Fred Vorys, and finally moving into the Far West we have Jeff Cross from Colorado, and Dave Thomas from Alaska.
A couple of local residents who did get away from Hanover in a big way were Bob and JackieKimball. They beat it off to the sunny isle of Bermuda and had a great time. Bob reported an enjoyable meeting with Don Furber's son Steve '73, as well as Steve Roehm Tuck '69, while scuba diving in thos balmy waters.
Brief visits to Hanover late this summer included Dr. William'and Shirley Schillhammer down from Montpelier for the Horizons Program. Bill is chief medical director for National Life Insurance Co. Dune Fitchet was briefly in town to look after some property he wisely purchased a few years ago.
Dartmouth's first soccer game against Middlebury brought a familiar face to town. Gene Bokor and daughter Jill cheered son Bruce '76 to one goal and two assists in a 3-1 victory. Gail was back home cheering a younger son to victory for his high school team. I trust it is one of the Dartmouth farm teams.
Reg and Nancy Pierce reported a pleasant visit with Wally and Mary Owens up from Clinton, N.Y., as well as George and Andy Carr up from Connecticut. And, as noted last month, Reg has joined the Hanover advertising agency of Stephens & Kirwan, founded three years ago and serving a balance of local, regional, and nationa accounts. A second mention, we may as well admit, enables us to use this picture of our jovial ex-innkeeper provided by S & K.
A great letter from Chip Coleman indicates he is getting the inside scoop on the nation's most popular sport. Chip is working for President Ford on the National Gambling Commission. This ought to be good for a few interesting stories this fall. Chip reported running into BillMcElnea '44 in Vegas. Bill is prexy of Caesars World Inc., which owns Caesars Palace.
Recent word from Boston has it that JulianCohen has been elected chairman of the board of the Brookline Trust Co. After this last year, I suspect some of our classmates could use a friendly banker. We have also heard that SpenSmith, our world travelling pulp salesman, has been made a trustee of Vermont Academy.
Hard core '46ers will remember Bryan Battey (see picture) as a tenor-saxist and pianist with the Green Collegians and the Carl Rock Band, you can now see him "live" playing piano at the Apollo Restaurant in Falls Church, Va., and hopefully at our next Reunion.
Look forward to seeing many of you in Hanover this fall, and do keep us posted on your activities. My channels of information run shallow right now, so I really appreciate your relaying any information on yourself or fellow classmates.
