As a part of the State University of lowa's program to revise their liberal arts college, President Virgil M. Handler recently appointed Professor Edward C. Mabie '15 as director of general studies in the liberal arts college. Professor Mabie will assist Dean Earl J. McGrath in the further development of the general education program first started at lowa in September, 1944
The program was instituted in an attempt to approach more closely the University's conviction that liberal education is primarily concerned with men and women as human beings rather than as workers, voters or homemakers. New curricula were set up by the faculty and put into operation starting in the fall semester of 1944. Professor Mabie will be chiefly concerned in assisting the Dean maintain consistency in the policy and program of the general education plan. He has had a continuous and active part in the planning of the program since it first went into effect.
Since his graduation from Dartmouth, Professor Mabie has been associated with Dartmouth, Illinois Wesleyan University, the University of Kentucky, as well as lowa in teaching positions, and served for a time with the New Hampshire State Tax Commission. He is at present head of the speech department and director of the Fine Arts Theatre at lowa.
