BONUS CHECKS ranging from $50 to $300 each were received in the mails on the first of April by Dartmouth faculty and staff members. Each check was accompanied by a memorandum from President Dickey explaining the schedule for bonus payments made by the College with the approval of the Trustees in an effort to lighten the current financial burden for faculty and staff members.
Full-time faculty members who are single each received a check for $100; married men received $2OO each; and married men with dependent children received $300. Among staff members, only those employed prior to Sept. 1, 1946, were eligible for the bonus. Regular, presently employed, fulltime staff members received $125 each while temporary, presently employed, fulltime members were paid $50 each. All of these amounts were subject to the regular withholding tax.
In his letter to the faculty the President noted two points: one, that this payment "was presumably the last such payment," and, two, for the final summer session to be held this year, summer teaching payments would be made as they had been in the past.
At the same time that the announcement of bonus payments was made, it was revealed that a complete survey of the salaries of staff assistants, their hours of work and other related problems would be undertaken in the near future. The committee which will make the survey is headed by Donald W. Cameron '35, Associate in Placement, and includes Profs. Bancroft H. Brown and Herman Feldman.
