WE CAN'T ALWAYS HAVE a meeting which was as successful as our last one, but we will keep trying. On Monday March 31 at the University Club in Milwaukee over sixty Dartmouth men and fathers of Dartmouth men attended a dinner given in honor of Herbert F. West '22, professor of comparative literature at the College. The banquet was held in the beautiful library room of the club, and to accommodate more we would have had to remove some of the books. But Herb West and Dr. H. A. Tarbell '78 kept us so int erested that we had no time for the books anyway, so it wouldn't have mattered. We will always have room for one more.
We were amazed to learn that Professor West has some 300 men enrolled in his courses. He talked informally on the College, its problems, and of the veterans who are now attending. He said that a teacher cannot help but be awed in the presence of men in classrooms who have made so much recent world history. He explained President John S. Dickey's "Great Issues" course, and some of the aims which the College has in educating men to live in the world that is, ever having in mind Dartmouth's goal of training men to be leaders. Near to Herb's heart is the Dartmouth Baker Library. Ever and better stocked with rare and good book collections, it has already arrived at being one of the top-notch libraries in the United States. Herb is on a committee which is searching for rare book collections and which hopes to chart their destination toward Dartmouth, either now or via the last will and testament. Herb's office as well as his heart is in the Dartmouth Baker Library.
On the less serious side, according to some, was our annual meeting and election o£ officers right after the dinner. However, by due process, nominations had been submitted to the members through the mail. With no additions to the slate, and there being no opposition, our retiring and efficient president, BillMinehan '3O clipped his elegant English into phrases so effective that the legal election and transfer of the club's stewardship was engineered with no more time loss than it takes to put a new Greek king on the throne.
Emerging victorious were Bradford W.Brown '28, president; Herbert (Skip) French '38, vice president; Vaughn G. Berry '24, secretary (that looks like it was railroaded!); Robinson Bosworth '37, treasurer; and DonGates '42, assistant secretary and treasurer (the last office shows that we are growing).
There were some out of town men present: Will A. Pitz '40, and Bill Donohue '45 from Manitowoc, "Swede" Swenson '23, and son John 'SO, who also calls himself "Swede," from Hanover. John Trost '31 and Bob Butler '37 from nearby Waukesha. The students who were home on vacation and who attended the meeting were: Robert G. Griffith 'SO, Monte Huebsch 'SO, Doug Mann 'SO, Thomas J. McCollan ' 46, Fred Schmidt '45, Mac W. Taylor 'SO, Bill Trump '46, Richard Trump 'SO, and Jack H. Wetenhall Jr. 'SO.
Why don't more of you men come in from out in the state? This is your club too, you know, and the chances are good that you'll have a swell time.
Our Monday noon luncheons at the Astor continue as usual, with good attendance. All Dartmouth men are welcome.
