With the death of Philip Young '96 on June 20, 1946 one of the College's anonymous gifts was made public. In 1927 Mr. Young, president of Baker, Young & Co., Inc., Boston investment bankers, donated $12,000 to the College "to make possible the placing of electric light wires underground around the campus and the installation of colonial street lamps."
Prior to Mr. Young's gift, the street lighting of college property was of the ordinary uncovered, goose-neck street lamps, and was powered through overhead wires. Not long after the College installed the underground system, the town of Hanover followed suit by replacing the old street lamps and putting the wires underground in the Main Street shopping district.
In addition to the above gift, Mr. Young willed to Baker Library his specialized collection of books on the collecting of antique furniture and china. Among the collection are a few first editions.
A native of Portsmouth, N. H., Mr. Young left Dartmouth in his sophomore year and spent the rest of his life working in the investment banking field, in which he achieved considerable success. He was awarded an honorary Bachelor of Arts degree by Dartmouth in 1921.
