As NEAR AS can be determined from existing town records, a historymaking precedent took place in Hanover on April 23 when the town population was swelled by a male baby, Ronwi Kanawaienton. Formally named Louis Thomas Cook, he is the son of William and Evelyn Cook, both full-blooded Mohawk Indians, and his birth is the first of a full-blooded Indian in Hanover so far as is known.

Bill Cook, a member of the Class of '49, former Marine Corps fighter pilot and present star of the varsity lacrosse team, explains that his son's Indian name is derived from an Indian practice of selecting names denoting something of consequence that happened at the time of birth. For instance, his own name, Flying Cloud, is derived from the fact that he was born during a storm. His son's name, not as easily translatable, roughly means a warning to beware of seemingly firm ground made treacherous by spring freshets. Dartmouth alumni, remembering Hanover's April weather, should easily comprehend the appropriateness of "Ronwi Kanawaienton."
