Donald F. Ewing '3l of Keene, N. H., became the center of one of the by- now-familiar spy charges of the Soviet bloc in early September, when the U. S. State Department refuted the claim of Bulgarian officials that he had been re- called as vice consul in Sofia because he had been caught in espionage activ- ity for this country. The State De- partment described as "a transparently fabricated maneuver" the street arrest of two Bulgarians in Ewing's presence and the alleged discovery of incrimi- nating papers in the pocket of one of the men.

Ewing is now back in this country for reassignment with the li. S. For- eign Service. He first went to Sofia as staff officer in January 1947 and became vice consul nine months later. He was instructor in the American College in Bulgaria from 1931 to 1935, was in the U. S. Army during the war, and joined the Foreign Service in 1946.
