November 1948

IN THE NATIONAL ELECTION, which reaches its culmination this month, the issue of civil rights has played an important role, particularly in the split of the Democratic Party. To discuss this issue and its significance for the post-election years the ALUMNI MAGAZINE was fortunate to have available right in Hanover a nationally recognized authority. Robert K. Carr '29, Joel Parker Professor of Law and Political Science, who served as executive secretary of the President's Committee on Civil Rights, is the author of this month's lead article, Civil Rights in America, starting on Page 13.

In this issue the MAGAZINE begins a new series of articles by Dartmouth men in key centers around the world. The first of these on-the-spot reports comes from Edwin A. Bock '43, former editor-in-chief of The Dartmouth, who spent three months in central and western Europe this summer. A Reportfrom Europe will be found on Page 23. The next report in the series will come from Paris.

President Dickey's convocation address appears in full on Pages 20-21 and an illustrated story on The Dartmouth Elms, endangered by the spreading Dutch elm disease, is on Pages 18-19.
