AMONG THE RECENT GIFTS made to Baker Library through the Friends of the Dartmouth Library were a D. H. Lawrence collection from William W. Grant '03 of Denver, Colo., and several first editions of Don Marquis from George Matthew Adams, according to an announcement last month by Prof. Herbert F. West, Secretary of the Friends.

A member of the Executive Committee of the Friends, Mr. Grant gave' 46 first editions of the writings of D. H. Lawrence, plus four first American editions, a later edition of one of D. H. Lawrence's books, three numbers of Phoenix and several numbers of Adelphi containing material by and about him.

From Mr. Adams the Library received 29 books including presentation copies of Hermione, Carter & Other People, Dreamand Dust, and two copies of Don Marquis' play about Jesus, Th Dark Hours. Also in the collection is a Christmas card of Hal Marchbanks '24, containing a poem by Don Marquis.

Mrs. Bella Landauer, for many years a most generous giver to the Baker Library, recently gave Baker Library a magnificent collection of 216 pieces of Kipling's music. Many were printed in England, and some in America, over a period of more than sixty years. This collection would be almost impossible to duplicate today and consists of 22 different editions of On theRoad to Mandalay, and such famous songs as Danny Deever, Mother o'Mine, and The Absent-Minded Beggar. Also included are two fine holograph letters of Kipling, something which rarely comes on the market.

Paul Sample '2O also gave the Library six early oil paintings, and seven watercolors, all of which show changes in his progress and development as a painter.

A gift of two completely signed sets of the University of Washington Chap Books, 49 in all, edited by Glenn Hughes, has also been received from Alexander Laing '25.

NEW NAVY TRAINEES: Capt. Roger E. Nelson USN, commander of NROTC at Dartmouth, swears in 113 first-year students in a College Hall ceremony. These additions more than doubled the Unit's strength this fall.
