ONE OF THE top chemists in the United States and certainly one of the very foremost of Dartmouth's men of science is Dr. Lyndon F. Small '20, who has the formidable title of Head Chemist, Division of Chemotherapy, National Institute of Health, U. S. Public Health Service. In a full-length profile, written by Prof. John Hurd '21, associate editor of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, an account is given of Dr. Small's discovery of Metopon, a non-habit-forming drug, more effective than morphine, which has been a priceless boon to those suffering the tortures of cancer. While in Washington this past summer, on a special tour of duty with the Naval Reserve, Professor Hurd wrote the article beginning on Page 13.
The second in the series of informal reports from Dartmouth men around the world appears this month under the title Letter fromParis (Page 19). It is written by William I. Zeitung '43, who is studying fine arts at the Sorbonne as recipient of a research fellowship. Next month, if the trans-Atlantic mail holds up, the MAGAZINE will print a Berlin report from Clinton C. Gardner '44, newspaper man in the German capital.
A tribute to Pat Kaney, gym coach and physical education professor who died September 23, appears on Page 23, and a summary o Treasurer Halsey C. Edgerton's 1947-48 finan cial report on Page 21.
