John A. Rand '38, Director of the Dartmouth Outing Club, in charge of undergraduate activities, was honored by the Club last month by being elected a lifetime Honorary Member, a distinction reserved "for persons who have rendered exceptional service to the Dartmouth Outing Club or to outdoor life." This action was initiated by Cabin and Trail and approved by both the D.O.C. executive committee and the board of trustees.

The Cabin and Trail recommendation of his honorary membership was as follows:

As a material representation of our esteem for John Rand and our respect for his capable way of directing the Outing Club and dealing with us, the undergraduate members, Cabin and Trail recommends that he be made an Honorary Member of the Outing Club. We do not wish this to be regarded as the setting of a precedent, as we feel that it is only justified in the case of an exceptional leader like John Rand, to whom the Outing Club owes a great debt, and from whom it can always benefit by having him as a member.

Rand was named Associate Director of the D.O.C. upon his graduation in 1938, after he had served as a Club leader during his undergraduate years. He was named Director in 1942 and soon after was granted leave to serve with the 10th Mountain Division in the Aleutians and Italy. Following his discharge in 1945 he returned to the College as D.O.C. director and has since concentrated his efforts on the development of the undergraduate program.
