DARTMOUTH INDIANS INVADE MEXICO
Yes—the headline means what it says, but the invasion was an entirely friendly one and the Indians were twenty members of the San Diego Dartmouth Alumni Association accompanied by their squaws—pardon us, we mean wives—and friends.
The occasion was the second annual midwinter meeting and dinner for San Diego alumni and their wives and the dinner was held in the famous Jai Alai Restaurant in the beautiful new Jai Alai Fronton in Tia Juana, Baja California, Mexico. An outing in Old Mexico was decided upon as the best possible way to increase our knowledge of our neighboring sister republic and to promote in a small way better understanding between the two countries. To further these aims, the Mexican Consul in San Diego, the Honorable Rafael T. Orendain, was the principal speaker and guest of honor, and he was accompanied by Mrs. Orendain. The second speaker and honored guest was Francis C. Jordan, American Consul in Tia Juana, Mexico, whose charming wife was also present.
Despite a particularly foggy evening—we must confess that for once the usual wonderful San Diego climate was not up to par—a total of 49 guests enjoyed a delicious dinner in the Jai Alai Restaurant, and even risked life and limb in some not too successful attempts at Mexican tangos and sambas on the illuminated glass floor. After dinner President VanceDickerman '31 introduced Senor Orendain, who urged the continuation and expansion of the inter-exchange of college students as the best way to increase more favorable relationships between Mexico and the United States. Following a brief speech by Mr. Jordan, the entire party adjourned to the Jai Alai Fronton to watch the amazingly speedy and fascinating game of Jai Alai.
The ninth game of the evening was officially designated on the program as the Dartmouth College Sweepstakes and was so announced to the crowd. The officers of the San Diego Dartmouth Alumni Association, including President Dickerman, Vice President ParkerW. Meade '22, and Secretary-Treasurer Laurence M. Dalton '18 were introduced to the large audience along with Senor Orendain and Mr. Jordan. The Cuban team of Kiki-Arrieta won the Sweepstakes with Kiki settling the outcome with some beautiful covering of the front of the court.
Chairman of the evening, Parker Meade, and his Committee were enthusiastically voted a rising acknowledgement of thanks. His as- sistants were Harry W. MacKinnon '02, JohnG. Thompson '26, John L. Muchemore '43, and Secretary-Treasurer Dalton. Those present with their wives included: Harry W. MacKinnon '02, Warren Currier 'OB of El Centro, California, Charles W. Pearson '09, Laurance M.
