One of the problems which beset Class Secretaries in the preparation of their notes is the unavoidable time lag between composition and publication. Take tonight for instance. As we sit here we can hear stealthy noises, stiffled giggles, and a scurrying through the leaves, as the Small Fry prowl the neighborhood in celebration of what is known locally as "Cabbage Night." This is the night before Halloween, a night when the wary householder puts everything movable under lock and key, lest he find it the next morning, suspended from some convenient telephone pole down on the next block. Such is the setting tonight, and yet, you will scarcely have read these words before it is time to wish you A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. Small wonder that we find it difficult to keep abreast of these rapidly moving times.

Ponce De Leon, and those other seekers after the secret of Eternal Youth, had better move over and make room for our own Dick Henry, for he really has them 1 up at present writing. It will be recalled that Dick played a lot of very fine golf in his undergraduate days, playing on the Varsityfor three years. His touch improved with age,and as he continued to play, his scores wentdown, with the result that he was clubchampion at famous Baltusrol in 1944 and1946, and in the former year, teamed withJohnny Farrell to win the State Pro-Amateurmedal play championship. It was not until1950, however, that Dick decided to take acrack at the National Amateur which washeld this summer in Minneapolis, famousfor flour, thermostats, and Vim Heegaard.Dick squeeked through in the qualifyingrounds, flew in Minneapolis and proceededto confound the sports experts by winninghis first two matches by comfortable margins. At that point the papers spoke of Dick asbeing, "A New York CPA, father of threechildren, and to our knowledge, the oldestgolfer still around." That's a fine way tospeak of a young man of only 47! Dick succumbed in the third round, but only aftera tense struggle that carried to the 17thgreen. Our friend had made a marvelousshowing, and by playing in the championship,Dick got a tremendous thrill in achievingone of his life-long ambitions. We extendour heartiest congratulations on his successful accomplishment.

While congratulations are being passed around, it is in order to extend our best to Frank G. Karslake who was recently elected Vice President of the Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Company. Frank has long been connected with the Chicago office of the concern, and makes his home at 128 Robsart Road, Kenilworth, Ill.

A welcome letter was recently received from Chinee Allen, reporting on his latest flight into the realms of after-dinner speech making. Chinee was the speaker at a meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Nashoba. and met Dick Lawrence, Hank Hartshorn and StanChittick who were among those present. Chinee had a wonderful opportunity to talk with these fellows, as he stayed over-night with Stan and Barbara, and utilized Flank's talents as a chauffeur in providing the necessary transportation. Stan is slated to be the next President of the Club, thus adding one more name to the long list of 24 men who are assuming positions of leadership in Dartmouth affairs all over the country. Our best to Prexy Chittick and our thanks to Chinee for his timely news.

As this is the Alumni Fund issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, we have been asked to curtail our Class notes this month. Before shutting up shop, however, we would like to mention two items of importance in connection with Class activities. First, there is the matter of Class dues. Last year our Treasurer, George Anderson, was able to report a new high in the number of dues-paying members. Bills for this year reached you some time ago. The response has been good, but let's give George a boost toward an even better record this year by getting your check in the mail to him tonight. It will help a lot.

The second item is one which should be close to our hearts. You recently received a mailing piece relating to the establishment of our Memorial Book Fund to be used in the purchase of rare and beautiful books to be presented to the Dartmouth Library as a living memorial to those of our Classmates who have passed from our ranks. Your officers believe that this is a fitting way to perpetuate the memory of our friends, but to make the plan retroactive it is essential that a substantial fund be raised for that purpose. It is our intention that each man shall be so commemorated, and with your help, we shall see to it that there is kept "A record of their fame." Your check, be it large or small, will be most welcome.
