Coach Ellie Noyes is not blessed with a superabundance of material this winter. With only three or four outstanding performers, Dartmouth has been handicapped in every meet. The West Point Relays saw the Green come through with a second in the dash by Captain Walt Newman, a third in the 35-pound weight by Jim Burnham, and a fourth in the broad jump by Les Kleist. This trio of point winners was joined later in the season by Bill Kimball in the hurdles.

The Indians lost a dual meet to Cornell the next week by the convincing score of 74-39. Outstanding performances were marked up in the 35-pound weight throw, where Jim Burnham tossed the lead 46'6" for a new Dartmouth record, and by Les Kleist who set a new Dartmouth indoor broad jump record with a leap of 23' 23/4"Big Bill Kimball did his best for the Dartmouth cause by winning both hurdles, Captain Walt Newman won the quarter and Dick Morrissey took the pole vault. A scattering of other places produced the Green total.

The Indoor IC4A saw the Green finish far down in the money, with a meager 5 points to show for the evening activities of the 11 men who made the trip. Bill Kimball won all of his preliminary heats in the high hurdles and finished fourth in the finals. Captain Walt Newman had almost the same experience in the 60-yard dash, and finished third in the finals. Jim Burnham could not confine his efforts to the ring in the weight throw and Les Kleist had a similarly unhappy time in the broad jump, thereby disposing of the two other Indian performers who stood a good chance of placing.

The Heptagonal games were held in the Boston Garden on March 6 and saw the Indians take sixth place in a field of nine. (For the classical scholars among our readers, there were nine teams competing this year, but the game is still called the "heptagonals" for the sake of tradition.) The Green finished behind Army, Yale, Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia (in that order) and ahead of Pennsylvania, Cornell, and Navy (ditto). Captain Walt Newman was the sole winner for the Green, annexing the 50-yard dash ahead of a strong field. Other points were won by Kleist with a second in the broad jump, Spoor with a fourth in the high hurdles, and a third in the mile relay by a quartet of Dartmouth quarter milers.
