Hopkins Center Project Conducting Current Campaign Among Parents
May 1948

THE HOPKINS CENTER PROJECT is starting an intensive campaign this month to get S 1,000 or more from each of 1,000 parents of Dartmouth men. Lowell Thomas, chairman of the Parents Committee for the Project, and William H. Coulson, vice chairman, are heading up the million-dollar program.

Regional committees of alumni all over the country are arranging personal calls on thousands of parents of Dartmouth men, and others will be solicited by letters from Mr. Thomas. According to Robert K. Hage '35, executive secretary of the Hopkins Center Project, it is expected that 5,000 parents will be contacted.

Parents giving $1,000 or more will get an attractive certificate which will be signed by President Dickey; John W. Hubbell '21, National Chairman; Halsey C. Edgerton '06, Treasurer of the College; and Mr. Thomas. The certificate will read: "In recognition of his deep interest in the College as a Dartmouth parent and in gratitude for his generous support of the Ernest Martin Hopkins Center, has been designated a HOPKINS CENTER FOUNDER." The certificate is being designed by Ray Nash, nationally famous typographer and member of the Dartmouth faculty.

The names of the parents of all Dartmouth students in the classes of 1941 through 1951 have been sent to the regional committees for evaluation. Suggestions are being sought for parents of men who graduated prior to 1941 and who might be prospects for gifts. Parents who are themselves Dartmouth alumni are not being included in this campaign.

Mr. Thomas has announced the names of the members of his special Parents Committee. In addition to Mr. Coulson, they are: Frank W. Allen, Chicago; Royal D. Alworth, Duluth; Barney Balaban, New York City; William Balderston, Philadelphia; Charles K. Barton, Paterson, N. J.; Mrs. W. H. Beardsley, Springfield, Vt.; Ernest R. Breech, Detroit; Thomas C. In his letter to parents last month, Mr. Thomas wrote;

"Like you, I have a son who is proud to call himself a Dartmouth man. And like you, I am devoted to my son's College, even though it is not my own....

"Dartmouth men all over the country are working for the success of this Project. Undoubtedly one of them will get in touch with you soon to tell you more about it.

"The Hopkins Center Project is important to Dartmouth .... and I believe it is important to the country because it will help Dartmouth to do a better job of turning out good leaders and good citizens. The Parents Committee is counting upon your support."
