Spring has come to Vermont, but not to the Class of 1940. At last look, we were struggling to stay in the first division of our Alumni Fund league. The eager beaver section represented by those of us who try to keep the '4O chronicle somewhat accurate and more or less up-to-date, complain (or to phrase it with a word of more exact meaning, bitch) because the mailbag continues light. Being of those only slightly touched with talent for prose, we find it difficult to spin a news column, monthly, with one letter, two announcements, and whatever happens to catch the eye of a scissorwielder at somebody's clipping service.

Mayhap it's method that's wrong. Now, and for these past few years, ours has been to answer correspondence within, say, a month. We say thanks, give out with whatever at hand would seem to be of interest, and entrust it to the postal service. Then the months go by, and, possibly, over a couple of years, a third of the replies come through. It's a constantly decreasing stream. The indicated course is to flood you all with those long questionnaires, and keep up the barrage until we hear from you. It's coming, along about September, unless there are radical changes, and soon.

Anyway, we're still on the list from JackRourke Productions, who announces that Smilin' Jack will be seen, along with Melvin Douglas and Maureen O'Hara, in "The Long Denial", an RKO picture.

The birth of John I. Fitzgerald 3rd, on March 23, in Boston, first child of Jack and Alice; and the arrival of Laura Wells Craig on April 7, in Chicago, to Syd and Virginia, constitute the announcements for the month.

After considerable struggle with a final paragraph, emphasizing our plight in terms sufficiently biting to goad, or plaintive enough to coax, some few of you to letter-writing action, we quit for this time, only repeating the perennial cry of the empty file, "Why don't you write?"
