We started the new year off in great form —by confusing a couple of John Manleys. Apologies to ours, who may consider that our brief attempt to libel him as a potential bigamist is here retracted. It appears that there are two John Manleys, graduates of the Tuck School. The 1940 variety writes:

"As far as X know I'm happily married and have been since July 11 , 1946- Who is 'Virginia Cook of Syracuse' and do I have a twin?" The Syracuse Post Standard does not further identify Miss Virginia, and we'll never believe a newspaper again without a quick check of the files.

This being the annual Alumni Fund issue of this publication, the scribes, over no objections, are somewhat restricted on space. In the interest of getting what news there is in, the following has been cut to size:

Art and Dotti Ostrander were around for the holidays, traveling eastward en famille while Art was working around New England. They spent a pleasant New Year's Eve in Hanover, in good Dartmouth company, but reported the rest of the '40's stayed home Joe Adams, if all went as expected, graduated from Harvard Law in January, and immediately started his legal career with Bingham, Dana and Gould in Boston. We won't go into it at great length, but it should be noted that Joe joined the class from that great and sometimes rather vocal state of California The European branch approaches the vanishing point as Scotty and Louise Rogers joined our other repatriated classmates and traveled from Garmisch to Shaker Heights last month, leaving, according to us, Bob Clark and Hans Joachim Heinz in Hamburg, and JimMcElroy in Brussels, as the rear guard Tom George has opened a new studio in New York, from which "it may even be possible to earn a living as a 'fine' artist." Tom will specialize in portraits of people and country homes and scenes of New England and New York City. We offer our best wishes to the new venture, and confidently expect it will return to Tom more than that possible living Bill Halsey appears in the recent American Ski Annual as chairman of the classification committee of the U.S. Eastern Amateur Ski Asso. for the current season We have followed, more or less carefully, Mel Wax's recent journey into controversy through a series of articles written by him for The Rutland Herald analyzing the St. Lawrence Seaway battle of words. It appeared that he rather enjoyed himself in exploration beyond the limits of Vermont sports for the newspaper, including a summary which, we think, took the unpopular side of it We hear that 1940 will participate again in the Dartmouth Club of New York's plans for informal class parties through the winter. Those within reach of the city will be notified of dates and times Alec Clark is serving as secretary and publicist for the DOC of New York

The writers never write, at least to the class secretary. Bill Chapin, prodded, he admits, by his wife, reports the birth of a daughter, Pennell Anne, last March. She says men are not appreciative enough.

The current additions to the 1940 tribe, of which we have heard, are: Suzanne and Thomas Allen, who arrived in New York, on December 19, to John and Mary; Marilyn Mahoney, first-born to the Indianapolis George Mahoneys; Harriet Alyea, of Milwaukee, provisional member through her engagement to Ben Webb; and Shirley Ward of Lee's Summit, Mo., ditto by her engagement to Robert Smock Thompson.

Late word has reached us that Henry Hofmeister died in Tucson, Arizona, on January 13. There will be more details in the March issue.
