Dedicate Hiilman Memorial

On saturday, June 19, following the meeting of the General Association of Alumni, the granite boulder and bronze plaque honoring the memory of the late Harry Hiilman, Dartmouth track coach, was dedicated on Memorial Field. In the presence of alumni whose classes were holding reunions that weekend, a brief dedication address was delivered by Charles F. McGoughran '20, chairman of the alumni committee which raised funds for the memorial. The Rev. Leslie W. Hodder of St. Thomas Church gave the invocation and the Rev. John W. Sliney, former pastor of St. Denis Church in Hanover, gave the benediction.

Mr. McGoughran's dedication address follows in full:

We have met here today to pay an affectionate and dutiful homage to a great and kindly man. Upon the lengthening roll of Dartmouth s sons who have contributed their lives and services to make this confused world a better place in which to live, is now inscribed the name of Harry Hillman. He was not unknown to fame-the athletic accomplishments of his youth and his achievements in his chosen career lifted him above the crowd, but Dartmouth remembers him for his qualities of manliness, sportsmanship and friendliness to all who came within the scope of his influence. All that is Dartmouth was Harry Hillman. His was the word of commendation in the moment of victory—his the word of solace and comfort to soften the stina of defeat.

It is not for this voice to pronounce his eulogy. However, it is altogether fitting that we should pause these few minutes to dedicate this enduring bronze and rugged granite to that warm and generous heart. It is altogether proper that here in these surroundings that he knew and loved so well-that here among his friends-at the scene of his life's work, we should place this memorial. Let those who pass and repass down through the years know that Dartmouth reveres and cherishes the momory of her devoted son. May Harry's memory endure to inspire venerations of Dartmouth men as yet unborn. With a full and grateful heart I dedicate this memorial to the memory of Harry Hillman.
