WE ARE VERY HAPPY to be able to announce in these notes that Babert V.Brooks Jr. is the recipient of the Gulf Oil Corporation's Fellowship for the academic year 1948-1949. The Fellowship, awarded each year by the Gulf Oil Corporation to a second-year man and providing up to $1,500 to cover the recipient's expenses for the year, is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Dean and the Faculty of the School. Mr. Brooks graduated from Dartmouth with the Class of 1947. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and saw service during the war with the U. S. Merchant Marine.
Last month, because of space limitations, we reported the election of officers of the local Chapter of the Clearing House but omitted the names of those selected to guide this year's activities. For your information, here's the line up: President, J. J. Lewis', Vice President, D. P. Ash; Secretary, J. R.Morse; Treasurer, A. B. Hinman; Social Chairman, A. E. Schlosser.
This group, with the social chairman and his assistants, D. R. Ryan, and F. P. Wuerfel, taking the leading role, has sponsored several interesting events during the past month. A mid-morning coffee period, held in Stell Hall from 10 to 10:20, has proved to be a popular addition for both faculty and students. Daily attendance is reported to be good. On Saturday, November 13, the Social Committee sponsored a party in Stell Hall for students, faculty, and wives who wished to listen to the broadcast of the Cornell game. A buffet supper for the second year men, faculty and wives, held Sunday, November 21, was also well supported, with a total attendance of about sixty. Movies of the Harvard game followed the supper.
During the past month, several guest lecturers have appeared before Tuck classes. R. F. Weinig D'25, Vice President and General Manager of Wincharger Corporation, Sioux City, lowa, spoke before Professor Burleigh's class in Organization on the "Application of Standards in Industry." On November 12, C. F. Holbrook D'20, Store Management Division, Holbrook Grocery Company, Keene, N. H., discussed current management problems of the independent food retailer with Professor Davis' Marketing class. PaulD. Caskey, Vice President of Southern Advance Bag and Paper Company, met with Professor Griswold's Financial Management class to discuss "Property Insurance from the Buyer's View Point." Professor Burleigh's Administrative Controls class has had two meetings with H. Dwight Aleader T'41, Supervisor of Accounting and Special Assistant, Lighting and Rectifier Division, General Electric Company, to discuss the budgeting problems of the large corporation. On Tuesday evening, November 30, Dr. J. B. McKenna of the Medical School staff and college psychiatrist gave a lecture on "The Psychiatric View of Personality." The lecture, sponsored by Professor J. E. Walters for his students in Personnel Management, was the first of a brief series. The second and concluding session will be a two hour meeting, December 7 on "An Approach to Counseling Employees in Business."
Prof. A. W. Frey's Market Research and Planning group is conducting studies of the Claremont trading area, as a part of their training in the techniques of market determination. The project is being carried on in cooperation with Claremont business men.
C. W. Morse T'25, Vice President of Doremus & Co., Boston, was featured in the article "Boston Bank Buys T V Film," which appeared in the October issue of Sponsor.
Mr. and Mrs. James Harue Turnure Jr. T'48 are the proud parents of a daughter, Nancy Elaine, born October 19. Harve, according to latest reports, is with the Burroughs Adding Machine Company's New York sales office.
James D. Wells T'47 has recently been transferred to the Hartford office of the Proctor and Gamble Distributing Company as Office Head Salesman.
Eric R. Haessler T-Th'42 writes that he is now in his third year at Harvard Law School. He reports that an article on trusts and taxation is in the works for publication in the Harvard Law Review.
R. H. Berquist T'39 recently terminated his employment with Dodge and Mugridge, and joined American Cyanamid Company as Industrial Relations Director of the Warner's plant in Linden, New Jersey.
F. C. Dyer T'48 is now located in Washington, D. C. His home address, according to latest reports, is 8804 Manchester Road, Silver Springs, Md.
Arthur E. Nissen T'35 has announced the opening of his office for the general practice of law in Damariscotta, Maine.
