Now that the summer is over—and I hope we have all had a very pleasant one—we have to get down to more serious thinking, and one thought is to try to keep our class intact and spread around news so we can keep in touch with each other. During the last two months many very interesting matters have come in and I will report parts of these letters to you. Along with very pleasing news items, we have had several that lead us to believe that none o£ us are getting very much younger.

One very sad bit of news is that Ray Collard, and also Merle E. Maynard passed away, the former on June 20.1 have tried very hard to get some information regarding Ray's death but up to date have been unsuccessful. Most of us knew Ray very well when we were in college, and always appreciated what a fine fellow he was, and I am sure we all regret his untimely death.

Merle passed away July 2 in Brookline, Maine. The additional notice of Merle's death appears in the In Memoriam column in this MAGAZINE.

A letter from Ruth Sisson states that Walter had a slight heart attack the early part of June, but is progressing nicely and expects to be back to normal life by this fall. We also have news that Spike Mclntyre was afflicted the same way and likewise is on the road to complete recovery. Also, for those who haven't heard, Don Brooks had to take a long vacation for a similar reason. It all goes to prove that it's about time we looked into our own physical set-up and possibly had a thorough check-up with the doctor. Ruth Sisson reports that their family is growing up rapidly. Carol is married and lives in Cleveland; her husband, William Freeman, is with the Standard Oil Company of Ohio. Their son, Joseph Emery, is to be a Junior at Dartmouth in the fall. Polly is entering her second year at Simmons College in Boston. Pete (Walter Jr.) is pre-school age for one more year. Ruth goes on to say that Walter had a fine visit with Barney and Adele Thielscher on the way to Hanover back in June, and that it was fine to be up Hanover way again. Bob Scott writes as follows:

"Ever since Dartmouth and Yale renewed their football rivalry, Anita and I have had a '17 party, and I had fondly hoped that) they could continue unbroken as long as my good right arm could hoist a drink and there was a '17-er left who could hoist one with me. But that old ogre, business, has stepped in this year to break the continuity. I m sailing September 29 on the Queen Mary for a four- to six-week inspection tour of our English and European factories and offices. I do have a tentative reservation to sail on the Mary from Cherbourg on October 22 which would bring me back in time for the game, but the odds are that I will catch the succeeding sailing in November.

"Would you kindly announce in the next alumni news that we are unable to hold the party this year, but hope to resume in 1950?

"I came back last night from a week's trip to Cape Cod on my boat. Dropped in at Quisset Harbor and had Don and Marion O'Leary aboard for lunch and a few scotches. We rowed ashore for supper at their hotel. Don rowed back with us about 10 P.M., and strange to say, we had some difficulty in finding the right boat. Sincerely—Scottie"

Doc Walters has been in correspondence with Dan Harris of Oklahoma City, Okla., and apparently Dan is enjoying good health as well as plenty of prosperity.

A note from one of our '18 correspondents states that Art Stout's wife has really taken on a lot of education and has obtained her Master's Degree. The report further states that Art is up in Duchess County and fast becoming the outstanding real estater.

While at Martha's Vineyard this summer, Elsie and I saw Eddy and Marge Earle. The Earles, as you know, have a home in Martha's Vineyard and Eddy spends a month or so up there every year.

Mott Brown writes a most interesting letter which will help to serve us for the next issue. Mott still does quite a lot of traveling and was fortunate enough to run into various members of our class such as ShermSmith, Bill Eaton and Bill Sewall.

Harold Wendall has resigned from the Equitable Life Insurance Society and become a partner in the Burns-Wendall Insurance, Ltd. Congratulations, Harold!

Hanover Inn reports that Perc Streeter and family were in Hanover during May; also, the Sherm Smiths, Phil Bloods, James Montgomerys, Irving Greens, and the Don Brooks all stayed at the Inn at one time or another during the Wmmer.

In closing, I suggest that each one of you who has not sent in any news lately sit down and scribble out a few notes so we can pass the good word along. Most of you must have had a very, interesting summer so let's hear about it.
