News of the sort Dartmouth would like to receive more often was the announcement early in September that Miss Ethel Clark Ranlet of Manchester, N. H. had left $20,000 to the College as a scholarship fund. This endowment is to be known as the David Joseph Clark Fund in memory of Miss Ranlet's mother's father, a graduate of Dartmouth in 1836 and a native of Stratham, N. H. As specified in Miss Ranlet's will, the income is to be used for needy and deserving students, with preference for boys born in or residing in Stratham, N. H., Manchester, N. H., or elsewhere, in that order.

During the fiscal year ended June 30, gifts to endowment totaled $364,428. The largest single bequest was the William Nelson Cromwell fund of $102,700. Additions to the class memorial funds totaled $33,681, and $18,572 was added to the R. Melville Cramer Foundation endowment.

Gifts to Dartmouth for all purposes totaled 1784,139, of which $418,570, including the 1949 Alumni Fund, was for current use. Among the latter were $13,500 from the Benjamin A. ICimball Trust, 113,500 from the Carnegie Foundation for retiring allowances, and five gifts totaling $11,823 for Medical School research.
