THE COLLEGE

WHEN ELEAZAR WHEELOCK first settled his Indian school on Hanover Plain, "he gathered together his small band of students in the forest clearing and with prayers and hymns launched Dartmouth College upon its great educational adventure. One hundred and eighty years later the Hanover scene is vastly different, but at the opening of each new college year Dartmouth is again one in spirit and purpose with the little group of pioneers who made the College motto—Vox clamantis in deserto— a literal truth. So it was when students and faculty assembled in Webster Hall on the morning of September 21 to participate in the Convocation exercises officially opening Dartmouth's 181st year. Spiritually speaking, there was no roof over their heads, no walls closing them in. They were one with Eleazar Wheelock, in the wilderness clearing, launching a new chapter in the educational adventure that is Dartmouth College.'
