To start off our winter program, the dinner meeting of October 19 saw several matters well accomplished.
First, election of new officers: President, Richard J. Heer '4O; Vice-President, RobertW. Tucker '27; Secretary, Ed W. Atkinson '28; Treasurer, James C. DeHaven '33.
Second, discussion of a more active "recruiting" program to interest promising boys in applying for entrance to Dartmouth. In this connection, favorable action was taken on the recent suggestion from the Alumni Secretary that the MAGAZINE be placed in preparatory and high school libraries.
Third, and highlight of our evening, a talk by our own Dr. John B. C. Eckstorm '98. He's had a varied and distinguished life: football days at Dartmouth, when he was captain of the 1897 team and mentioned as an outstanding player by Walter Camp- coach at Kenyon and Ohio State University —a full life as a physician in Columbus, retiring nine years ago. But Dr. Eckstorm s "retirement" was only a ruse, we suspect, so that he could give all his time to the forgotten men behind the wall of the Ohio State Penitentiary. To them he has brought his medical skill, his sympathy and understanding, his devotion to their best interests leading many times to rehabilitation. Retired? Not so you'd notice it!
Doctor Eckstorm has been frequently honored for his accomplishments by numerous groups, but never more sincerely than by the Dartmouth men around the table who listened so intently to his recollections of the past, his interests of the present, and his challenges for the future.
A particular welcome to our two new members, both present at the dinner: John R.Barr '49, here with Pittsburgh Plate Glass Cos. and Richard J. Osgood, Th. '47, representing Joy Mfg. Cos.
Others present: Ed W. Atkinson '28, L. P. Baker, Jr. '44, W. C. Brown, Jr. '33, S. J. Caldwell '38, Dr. A. R. Cohen '31, S. F. Dennett '15, Al English '15, R. P. Goldthwait '33, R. J. Heer '40, W. W.
