Contrary to previous predictions, there is a possibility that Dartmouth's most famous week-end, Winter Carnival, won't be a flop this year after all. There is now about ten inches of snow on the ground, and with Carnival less than a week off, the snow that is now falling bodes well for a white week-end.
And speaking of snow-jobs, Rog Tenney,Don Drescher, "Fink" Finkelday, and DaveMiller were all seen schussing the slopes at Big Bromley this past week-end, each with a bevy of four or five beautiful women tailing along behind him. The whole mountain and all the skiers on it were supposedly shaken up pretty badly by a resounding head-on collision held by Rog and Don. No one was hurt, but awed and astounded spectators said it took the two fifteen minutes to get their various skis, legs, arms, etc., unwound from each other. Rog Dickinson was also at Bromley, and was skiing with a very good-looking young lady. He's now working in Connecticut.
The news is a little fuller this month since a lot of the fellows have written good letters in to us. Bob Blum apparently is living in a ski bum's paradise. He writes as follows: "I'm a bus boy in The Ram, which is the second most expensive of Sun Valley's five restaurants. We get room, board, lift pass, other privileges of the establishment, plus $75. a month, plus tips, and a percentage of the waiters' tips. Besides that, we get reductions when we buy equipment at S.V.'s various stores. I work from 4:30 to 11:30 P.M. and thereby have all day to ski. The skiing is really something."
Jim Schwedland and Al Gustajson were each in Hanover this past week. Both are taking graduate work in forestry, the former at Yale, the latter at Cornell. Jim says he isn't married and hasn't any kids yet, and Gus is in the same boat.
We're really loaded with more news about marriages and engagements this month. Don't let it be said that the Class of '48 doesn't hold its own as far as women are concerned.
Miss Virginia B. Thompson of Westfield, N. J., writes that she and Dave Packard announced their engagement last November 27. They will have a June wedding. Thanks for writing, Virginia, and congratulations from the class to you both.
Ronnie Spiers, who is now studying at Princeton's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, will be married this coming June to Miss Patience Baker of Attleboro, Mass., a junior at Wellesley.
Jerry Werber has become engaged to Margaret (Peggy) Murray Johnson of New Rochelle, N. Y. She is a sophomore at Connecticut College for Women and is a noted horsewoman. Jerry is now working with the advertising department of Gimbel Brothers in New York.
Swinging further west, Pete Swinscoe will be married on April 9 to Miss Joan Brownell McEwan of Winnetka, Ill., a graduate of Northwestern. And Rod Susen, also of Winnetka, has likewise become engaged. His fiancee is June Marie Saunders of Prospect Heights, Chicago. She is a graduate of Mundelein College.
And we are really late with this news. BillCampbell's betrothal to Jean Elizabeth Smith of Newark, N. J., was announced in November. She is a Mount Holyoke graduate and is now on the faculty of the Burnham School in Northampton. Bill is working for Botany Mills, Inc., Passaic.
Walt Baker and Bud Elliott each became husbands-to-be on Christmas Day. Walt is planning a late summer wedding with Joyce Mary Tilley of Rahwah, N. J. and the Katherine Gibbs School. We don't know Bud's prospective bride's name, but she is a student at Wellesley, and the wedding is planned for June. Walt is now a. teller at the Society for Savings in Hartford.
Marve Axelrod just walked into the room and broke the glad news that his bride-to-be is Miss Zella (Buzzy) Finkelstein of Newton Center, Mass., and of New London Junior College. A June wedding is planned.
Switching now to a more advanced status, three more '48s have become not engaged, but married. Al Fritzche's wife is the former Patricia Stuart of, we believe, New Orleans. The wedding took place last September 14 in New York City. Brad Winans married the former Miss Marguerite Revene of Glen Ridge, N. J., on December 26. She is a graduate of Tufts College. Charlie Kaufman wedded the former Miss Madelyn Bertha Clark of Worcester, Mass. and Bates College way last June 16. The last we know, the couple resided in Worcester where Charlie worked for the W. T. Grant Company.
To all the above engaged and married couples the Class extends its heartiest congratulations and best wishes.
And here is some individual news of a different type. Bob Tracy was hitch-hiking back towards Hanover in West Leb today and was picked up by Pete Hedley. Pete is now giving piano lessons. He just recently had an auto accident in which he took out seven guard rails near Quechee and did four hundred dollars worth of damage to his car. Tough luck, Pete!
And R.S. ("Approved") Repko was recently seen tripping the light fantastic in the fantastic light of Claremont's ("gem of the West") Roseland Ballroom. Dick was being escorted by two charming young ladies, one under each arm.
Well, men, guess that about does it for now. Many thanks for your letters to those of you that have written in to us. See you next month.
