The 35th annual Dartmouth Alumni Fund campaign opens April 1 with the mailing of a statement by the Fund Committee to all alumni on the College's financial needs together with a letter by John R. Mason '15, the 1949 Alumni Fund chairman. In his letter, Mr. Mason points out that although the 1949 objective of $375,000 would meet the College's minimum current requirements, he hoped that the level of gifts could be increased to meet the more severe problems which lie ahead.

In examining the College's three sources of income, the fund committee's statement emphasized that student fees still pay only about 50 per cent of the College's operating costs; that income from endowments last year covered only 27 per cent of the totol expense as compared to 35 per cent in 1941; and that only through the amazing and indispensable growth of the Alumni Fund from $196,000 in 1941 to $382,000 last year had Dartmouth found the means to continue its high standards, among which is a new faculty salary policy which brings men to their peak at about age 55 instead of at retirement as formerly.

One of Dartmouth's immediate needs is an expansion of its scholarship program, particularly since practically all students benefited by the GI Bill will have finished college by 1952.

Prior to the opening of the campaign, class agent dinners were held at the University Club in Chicago, March 29, and at the University Club in Cleveland, March 30. Similar dinners will be held at the Dartmouth Club in New York, April 6, and at the Algonquin Club in Boston, April 7. Among the speakers will be President Dickey and Mr. Mason.
