"Liberal arts colleges like Dartmouth not only seek to make men learned, but they seek to make men wise," Dean L. K. Neidlinger '23 told 30 members of the Dartmouth Club of the* Mohawk Valley at the annual meeting on April 18 in the Fort Schuyler Club, Utica.

"Dartmouth is judged not by what its undergraduates do today, what they did yesterday or what they will do tomorrow," the Dean added. "The true test of Dartmouth's place in the world today depends upon what its graduates do and say in their respective communities."

Dean Neidlinger, who was introduced by his classmate, our own Jim Brown '23, made a rather detailed and informative speech on the College, Hanover, and the college problems of the times. In the less formal discussion that followed, he answered all types of questions on Dartmouth today and tomorrow.

We like to think the Dean felt even more than a little bit at home during his visit. After all, another classmate, Dr. James G. Douglas '23, was on hand. Two classmates in such a small group seemed unusual. Dr. Jim, who by the way has announced his candidacy for Mayor of Utica on an independent Republican ticket since the meeting, vividly described "Pudge" as All-American tackle who smashed through opposing lines for the Big Green.

Because Clinton, a small community near Utica, recently completed a $lOO,OOO indoor hockey rink, club members 'interested in the Dean's discussion of artificial ice and the ice-making, equipment which he had experience with when coaching Princeton and which some alumni want for the Davis Rink at Hanover.

In the absence of Roland E. Chesley 'OB, our president, who was in South America, CharlesDeAngelis 'OB, vice-president, presided. Mrs. Neidlinger was entertained at an informal reception in the club annex arranged by Mrs. Jim Brown.

Those who attended the meeting included James N. Capps 'l9; Joseph W. Keyser '32; Hazen B. Hinman 'l4; Francis F. Jones 'l4; A 1 Lyon '22; Charles H. Hunt Jr. '2B; W. J. Purcell '2B; Everett Shineman '33; Earl S. Liberty '29; H. B. Hinman Jr. '42; Bill Hayes '4O; Winthrop T. Sargeant '45; Gilbert Jones '45; Fred Berthold '45; John P. Hands '4l; Donald H. Staubes '52; Russell Hurd '36; William S. Calli '45; and those named earlier. Fathers of Dartmouth men included Robert O. Burns, Rocco R. Calli, R. J. Bankart, Hugh H. Staubes, L. Veighte. Tom Clark, a candidate for admission, attended.

Many club members enjoyed the opportunity of personally asking Price Lewis Jr. '42, schooner captain, about his recent voyage to and from the South Seas. Joe Kyser '32, who did an excellent job getting the members out, also received congratulations for his recent promotion to the presidency of the Utica Credit Bureau.
