October 1950

WITH the start of each new college year, football is very much in the air. For the lead article in this issue, opening our 43rd year of publication, we go behind the scenes of the gridiron spectacle and present something of the story of scouting—a part of the game that is little known but nevertheless of tremendous importance in the outcome of every Saturday afternoon contest. Roddy Wolbarst '43, Dartmouth's director of athletic publicity, is the author of There's Method Behind theFall Madness, starting on Page 15.

Also unpublicized but a power behind the face of things is Willard M. Gooding '11, Dartmouth's superintendent of buildings and grounds. His is the job of running an $11,000,000 plant. In a profile, Man on the Job . . .for Thirty Years (Page 19), John Hurd '21, our associate editor, tells about Mr. Gooding's work and personality.

A review of The Dartmouth Bible has been written by Dr. Donald B. Aldrich '17, Dean of the Princeton University Chapel, and appears on Page 23. A summary of 1950 Alumni Fund results is given on Page 17, and the announcement of a major art gift to the College is made on Page 18.
