Coach Ellie Noyes has slightly revised the grueling cross-country course, which leads up hill and down dale across the golf course and through the Vale of Tempe. Formerly considered perhaps the toughest grind in the country, the course is now a bit less overpowering, as well as some hundreds of yards shorter. The team has won its first two starts of the year, both on the local course, against Holy Cross and Fordham respectively. They then meet Yale and Harvard in dual competition, before plunging into the Heptagonals and the IC4A meet to wind up the season. With this kind of opposition, it seems somewhat less than likely that the team will go through the season undefeated.
The Fordham encounter was won by Dartmouth by the score of 21-40. As our readers will remember, in cross country the lesser score denotes the winner. The order of finish of the Green runners against Fordham will give you an idea of the composition of the current team. Finishing in the No. 1 spot was Stan Smiley, the brilliant and long-striding junior, who is the outstanding Dartmouth runner this fall. Running in No. 3 position, behind a Fordham runner, was George Rosenberg, a junior who has shown great improvement this year, after failing to win his letter as a sophomore. No. 4 was Sam Daniell, with Captain George Clendon finishing sixth. Then came sophomore Tom Kelly in the 7th spot, to round out the Green scorers. The latter has been handicapped this fall by a sprained ankle and is just rounding into condition. He is an extremely promising prospect and should improve steadily.
