A recent clipping from the Worcester Gazette carries quite a story about a new million dollar market center to be built shortly in Worcester. President of the West Side Shopping Center, Inc. is Paul Revere O'Connell.
Christmas cards this year brought some unique and interesting ones. Another very beautiful one from Betty Lindenmeyr showing their three attractive daughters, Tibby, Penny and Chips, and a portion of their lovely old home in Paramus, N. J. At times in the past through error we have given Carl credit for these lovely drawings and he beseeches us this year not to put him in the dog house by giving him credit as the artist. He says "I'm just the lunkhead hired hand who licks the stamps and drives them to the post office."
Cary and Helen Stiff published a very interesting paper called "Dogwood Farm Doings." It gives a very interesting account of their activities for the past year and of their obviously very happy life at their country home. There is a picture of the oldest boy, David, who is now a freshman at Dartmouth.
Another card from the Art Lymans with a picture of their lovely country home outside of Detroit.
The Dick Lougees have brought us up to date on their saga, some of which we will quote:
"This holiday season finds the Lougees happy in the recovery of Gerry from his accident on Jan. 6, 1948. Now, two years since his skull fracture, it is a pleasure to see Gerry talking normally again, riding his bicycle, and regularly attending the fifth grade, having passed his 10th birthday on September 8. Few can appreciate how trying has been this period for the little boy. Thought and action are cheerful and normal once more, he has advanced from Wolf to Bear in the Cub Scouts; and time, we hope, will erase all traces of the sad experience.
"The family stayed close to Worcester this summer while Dick taught summer school and ran chartered bus trips for his classes. Clare and Gerry took part in these: to Cape Ann, the Connecticut Valley, and Newport, R. I. In late August we packed the Nash car with supplies for Clare and Gerry for a year, and headed for New Mexico to seek a spot in the dry Southwest where Clare might find relief from sinus troubles occasioned by the dampness in New England. Three days out from Massachusetts the family cat "Toots" took leave of us in Indiana to become a Hoosier cat, but the rest of us arrived safely in the Rio Grande Valley, and after touring from Santa Fe to El Paso we settled on Socorro (Pop. 3700, elev. 4500') where Gerry entered grade school, and Clare found a position teaching convalescent children at the State Tubercular Sanatorium. Their apartment in a ranch style court faces out on the desert at the edge of town. Thanksgiving saw them visiting friends on a 7000-acre cattle ranch, and they will spend Christmas with relatives in San Francisco.
"Dick returned to his duties as Director of the Graduate School of Geography Field Camp, with 50 students, located this year near Fall River, Mass. Under his supervision the teams of students mapped the physiography of practically all of Bristol County. With resumption of the regular fall term at Clark University he has taught his two courses in Geography of New England and Physiography of the Western Hemisphere, varying this activity with week-end field trips on his own researches. To get the overall perspective necessary for comprehension, of the glacial waterfalls and great glacial lakes that he is studying, he took to the air, photographing from the nose of a C-45 piloted by his student, Lt. Randall. This was reminiscent of the work a year ago in Alaska which was summarized recently in a nicely illustrated but restricted government publication. Meanwhile the professor keeps the home fires burning in North Grafton, fortified with the comfort of an electric blanket! Fortunately for his gastronomic equanimity the University runs an excellent dining hall; but holes in socks can be quite a bother!
"From New Mexico and Massachusetts the LOugees send you their greetings and best wishes for Christmas and the New Year."
Mr. and Mrs. John Upham spent a weekend at the Hanover Inn late in November.
From the grapevine we learn that EddieRaisbeck within the past year has made an exhaustive study of the educational system in the town of Darien, Conn. After considerable careful study and discussion with leading educators throughout the country, he was able to bring about the expansion and betterment of the Darien School system and town meetings have approved his entire plan.
Quite a number of our class are serving as committee chairmen for interviewing candidates for admission to Dartmouth. This is very important work from the College's standpoint and we are happy to see so many of the class active in it. Steve Osborn is the Alumni Councilor in charge of all interviewing for the States of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana. The following are interviewing committee chairmen: Al Bliss,Mort Cavis, Harry Dey, Phil Fowler, MartyHeifer, Dick Hood, Eddie Knight, WalterLashar, Ken Murray, Norm Page, Sid Voice.Sam Wormser and Curt Wright.
