Dartmouth 38, Bowdoin 37. This one was a little too close for comfort. Facing one of the leading'teams in New England, Coach Michael's promising charges eked out a narrow victory in a meet which was unduly complicated by Dartmouth's disqualification in the medley relay. The visitors won this event to start the afternoon out on an unhappy note for the Green. Smith of Dartmouth then won the 220-freestyle, Mclntyre took the 50-yard freestyle, and Rogers won the dive. Then Bowdoin won the 100-yard freestyle and the 150-yard backstroke, followed by Bruch's victory in the 200-yard breaststroke for the Green. The visitors won the 440-yard freestyle and the 400-yard relay, which narrowed the margin of victory still more. Coach Michael knew that Bowdoin was good and that this one would be reasonably close. But not this close.
Dartmouth 55, Columbia 20. Giving some of his promising sophomores an opportunity to demonstrate their ability, Coach Michael saw his charges sweep through Columbia with no trouble at all. Starting with the goo-yard medley relay (Starch, Prior, Coulter), the Green won the 220-yard freestyle (Smith), the 50-yard freestyle (Ryan), the dive (Round), the 100-yard freestyle (Brace), the 150-yard backstroke (Douglas), the 200-yard breaststroke (Osborn), and the 440-yard freestyle. This left the 400-yard relay, which Columbia won only after the Green had been disqualified when anchor man Blaine Boyden barely outjumped the touch of his teammate. This gratifying and conclusive win gave Coach Michael a chance to see what he has in the Class of 1952. It would seem that he has quite a lot.
