These notes are being written in Clearwater, Fla., where during the month of January there were five members of '98 with their wives. Joe Bartlett and Sue, BuckyChandler and Marie, Melvin Smith and Edith, your secretary and Betty, with Fred Lord and Jean at Dunedin only two miles from Clearwater. There were several reunions of various groups, but not one of the entire crowd. One of the great pleasures of this Florida vacation was the opportunity to renew acquaintance with Melvin Smith, for we had not met since we were graduated from Dartmouth. Melvin has changed in appearance very little from our College days except that he is a bit,stouter. He is very pleasantly situated in a delightful home which is just around the corner from where your secretary is staying.

Joe and Bucky left the last of January, Joe for Boston and Bucky for Daytona Beach, where he and Marie were to continue their winter vacation.

Ned Kenerson '03 made a call on your secretary and we met Hap Hinman '10 on the street and we called on Jed Prouty '00 at New Port Richie and saw him for the first time since 1898.

We urge all '98 men to come down here next winter and avoid the cold and ice and snow of the north. While you up there had all the storms and extreme cold of February, down here we were basking in warmth and sunshine with flowers in bloom and oranges and grapefruit still on the trees.

Laurence Hewes suffered a heart attack on March 1 and died the following day. No further details were available at the time of writing this item. An obituary notice will appear in the May issue of the MAGAZINE. The sympathy of the Class goes to Mrs. Hewes and her family. In February Bill was one of five awarded a gold medal by the U. S. Dept. of Commerce, Bill's being for exceptional service with the Bureau of Public Roads.
