ALTHOUGH the snows may be gone and the birds may be singing by the time this report is published, the weather at the time of writing makes it seem appropriate to mention winter sports activities. Several members of the Thayer School faculty, with a background of skiing and skating competition, have continued to contribute to the development of these sports both informally and by officiating at meets held in Hanover. Ed Sherrard, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and former member of McGill's ski team, has served as timer in both the Dartmouth Carnival and the Children's Carnival meets. Millett Morgan, assistant professor of electrical engineering and former captain of the Cornell ski team, has assisted at the carnivals. Ed Brown '35, professor of civil engineering, and Russ Stearns '38, assistant professor of same, though having less spectacular personal ski histories, have done the on-the-spot ski jumping scoring which has given that sport the spectator interest so badly needed before the Brown-Stearns era. GeorgeTaylor, assistant professor of engineering and management, probably the outstanding figure skater of the community, served as director and referee of the children's carnival figure skating competition. Your columnist (?) has burned the midnight oil and munched DOC sandwiches working out the individual and team scores for the Carnival meets, has spent many a windy afternoon in the judges' stand directing the ski jumping tournament, and has held a stopwatch on the 6 to 15 year olders in the children's carnival. Enough of extra-curricular news of the faculty.

Visitors at the School at the time of the freshman fathers' weekend in February included Paul Halloran '20, who has a son Dave in the freshman class and a son Dick in the junior class, neither of whom is headed for Thayer; and classmate James Wright '20 who, though not a freshman father, has a son Alan who is headed for Thayer.

A very generous offer was made to the School last month by Hardy Ferguson '91 in the form of bound engineering periodicals and society publications covering a period of nearly sixty years. Mr. Ferguson's collection included several volumes which our library lacked and we have been most grateful and pleased to add them to our collection.

Russell Rice '16, who has been engineering office manager in the firm of Metcalf and Eddy, sanitary engineers, for several years, has been elected a member of the firm.

Congratulations to Chuck Howard '48 on his marriage February 2 to Miss Janet Louise Lehmer in Marietta, Ohio. The Howards will make their home in Mason City, W. Va.

More advanced congratulations to the Charlie Weinbergs '43 on the birth of son David on January 23.

A letter received recently from CharlieQuinn '47 brings the following news of his activities: "Since August 1948, I have been a student for the priesthood with the Dominican Order .... now my only connection with engineering is the remembrance of my happy days in Hanover .... very truly yours, Brother Terence." The address is Saint Joseph's Priory, Somerset, Ohio.

Wayne A. Perkins '05, formerly. Senior Engineer, Design and Construction of Dams for the California State Division of Water Resources, has announced the opening of his own office at 1180 Perkins Way, Sacramento, Calif. He offers consulting engineering services on water supply, dams, and hydraulic structures.

Briefly, and with apologies tardily, noted: Mer and Buff Williams '43 have added another prospective Thayer engineer to their family with the arrival of son David last September. They now have two boys. Buff teaches engineering at the University of Wisconsin. Betts and 800 Hayden '41 and the younger generation consisting of Bill and Kathy have moved into a new home at 213 Danbury Road, Bethesda, Md. George Kisevalter '31, address Box 3, Gothenburg, Nebraska, manages a corporation which builds and operates alfalfa dehydrating plants, of which he now has four in operation. Bob Pretat '48 has spent part of the .winter in Florida before returning to Texas where his last known address was Box 152, Houston.
