Before this column is in print you will all have received your official notices of our 35th Reunion. Now you will be able to get your plans organized and get the boss in a good mood to let you go to Hanover. George Simpson has his sleeves rolled up and only waits for the mailman to deliver your cards so he can report a 100% attendance. If you would only drop a line to your ex-roomie with the usual "I'll go if you do" line, I'm sure George's dream will come true.
The New York Times of Mar. 11 carried a picture showing Dr. William R. R. (Speed)Granger meeting with Mayor O'Dwyer as a member of the Mayor's Committee on Unity. The session at City Hall was devoted to discussing a report on New York housing.
That tired and bent old man puttering around the Boston streets last week was finally recognized as Cloughie, moving his polishing cloths to a new location at 195-197 High St. Understand Bill Huntress had a narrow escape, as he dropped in to see Cloughie during the moving, and only a plea of urgent business elsewhere saved him from moving the heavy machinery.
The night of Feb. 22 saw the Cloughs,Downings, Meaders and Fosters dare the heavy snowfall of that evening to motor to Lynn and watch the 8.U.-Dartmouth hockey game. My scouts inform me that the game was overshadowed by the antics of one NutNorwood waltzing up and down the front row, trying to keep up with his son and his gang.
Bags Wanamaker writes:
"We expect to be in Hanover in June, Grace, daughter Ruth, and yours truly. Ruth (Wellesley 1947)i graduates from Michigan Law School this June. Expects to take bar exams in the Fall. Have treasured memory of a talk with Jim Forrestal at Wellesley Commencement in 1947. I remember he asked about Norvie Milmore. Last season in Detroit, at a meeting of the Economic Club of which David Lilienthal was the principal speaker, I ran into Ralph Sawyer, who was presiding over the meeting. At the 1949 General Motors show, had the opportunity of shaking hands with Al Bradley. Lunched with Marv Frederick and Hal Smith several months ago. No success in locating classmates on my last Los Angeles trip. Enjoyed listening to Tuss McLaughry and Red Rolfe at the Dartmouth Club dinner in Detroit recently. My son, Robert (Yale 1939) is in the Aeronautical Research Laboratory of General Electric Cos. at Schenectady, N. Y. He has two children, Robert Jr. (6) and Cynthia Ruth (1). My daughter, Chalis, (Stephens 1939) is with Reader's Digest, International Section, N. Y. Am looking forward to the game with Michigan at Ann Arbor this Fall. As for myself, I skate occasionally, play a lot of bad golf, and the rest of the time is spent in. making and distributing tires."
Another letter from Jerry Shaw. Jerry reports having called on Reg Prior recently, and as they hadn't seen each other for 35 years, the reminiscences waxed strong. Jerry is connected with a buffing wheel manufacturing concern in Quincy in the roll of a director. His daughter Nancy is in Maryland College for Women, Class of 1950-Jerry Jr. D'51 daughter Elizabeth in Colby College, Class of 1952. Jerry hopes to make the reunion, but the graduation of one of his daughters at that time may interfere. Anyway, we won't miss seeing him at the football games as Jerry is one of those who have never missed a Harvard game since 1912.
Myra Chase writes in to say that Russ has had a serious operation but is now slowly convalescing and they hope to make Hanover in June, both for their son's graduation and the Big Reunion. Red Stevens is coming East to join them in their trek northward. LeoBurt called on them recently. Leo's daughter Marilee is President of the Smith College sophomore class and has been chosen to take her Junior year in Europe.
Bill Huntress and Ash St. Clair attended the Class Agents dinner in Boston, Mar. 29.
Carl Gish writes that he was in Denver recently and saw Phil Alexander. To quote from Carl: "Phil is looking as healthy and prosperous as usual." Phil's son Russ is working in the Denver First National Bank. Phil will not be able to make the Reunion, but Chuck Ingram writes to count him in.
How about some news from all of you for the next column?
