Doodles Gish reports being at the Yalegame where he ran into Ray and Olive Kingand Dud Rogers. Also the Columbia gamewhere he, Joe Harris, and Phil Murdochrepresented 1915. Attended the 1.8.A. convention in Florida during December, probably as an excuse to recuperate from theColumbia deluge.
Joe Harris writes: "I have been in Newark as Advertising Manager of the G. Krueger Brewing Cos. for several years since the breakup of the Hearst Atlanta-Georgian, of which I was assistant publisher and much more active in Dartmouth activities in the Southeast than I have been able to find, time for here."
Joe's daughter Jeanne, a graduate of Sweet Briar College, Sweet Briar, Virginia, is working hard at Columbia University for her Master's Degree in the field of Far Eastern Art. She hopes to go to the Orient in a year or two for further study when things quiet down more in China.
Red Stevens expected to leave the day after Christmas for three weeks' quail shooting in Arkansas, utilizing as his base of operation, Hot Springs, where he can combine the course of baths with the quail shooting.
Russ Livermure had to forego any thought of football this fall for, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Link-Belt Cos. of Chicago, he had to travel on inspecting trips to their plants in Indianapolis, Chicago, and Cedar Rapids. In between times he is serving as secretary of the Union League Club of New York, which I would judge leaves him very little time to practice law. Russ spends a great deal of his spare time at Westhampton Beach, where, he built a house last year.
This month I received two of the nicest, most interesting, and truly enjoyable letters from a too-long absent classmate, ArthurFord. Art is a proofreader for the Messenger Corp. in Auburn, Ind., publishers of religious and historical calendars, acknowledgements of morticians, Christmas cards, and assortments. His oldest daughter, Leola, handled all the insurance business in his office for several years, became qualified as a C.P.A., worked her way through and graduated from Wittenberg College, Springfield, Ohio, and is now teaching at the University of Minnesota where she is studying for her Ph.D., specializing in botany and agronomy. His youngest daughter Barbara worked her way through Tri-State College at Angola, Ind., married a fine young electrical engineer expert, Richard J. Maddigan from Newfoundland, and they are now busy building a home in Auburn while Art busies himself looking after his eighteenmonth-old grandson Joe. Son Henry studied at Wittenberg College, served in the Army for three years, married a charming Canadian girl, and now lives in a trailer at the University of Cincinnati, where he is studying electrical engineering on an alternating plan of working for a term and then studying for a term. With his wife and helpmate of thirtytwo years, Art figures he has found true happiness. Reading between the lines I would say that Art's family could stand as a symbol of that American way of life we proudly proclaim, but which has been so badly shaken during this last hectic quarter-century.
A nice long letter came in the mail from Bob Griffin this month. Bob is director of Research and Development for the Kid Group of the leather industry. After five years in the Navy, Bob was all set to enjoy the peaceful pursuit of civilian life but finds directing civilian engineers is somewhat more strenuous than ordering around the enlisted personnel. His son Hamilton is a student at the Clark School in Hanover, so Bob and I ought to have a lot in common as my youngest is enrolled there also. His daughter Joyce is a freshman at Skidmore and another daughter, Andrea, will soon enter Skidmore or Russell Sage. Having two boys at school myself, I can sympathize with Bob when he says he will soon have to apply to the Welfare Dept. for aid.
Under the impressive letterhead of Lyman Apiaries, Bill Lyman, the Bee and Honey Tycoon, writes in to say that he is happy and busy, but that there just isn't any news. Now there is a business for you—let the bees do all the work and you reap the honey. Hillman B.Hunnewell, formerly assistant vice president, City Mortgages, has been promoted to third vice president, City Mortgages of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Cos. of New York. This promotion places him in charge of the City Mortgage Division. Congratulations, Bill. JimForrestal is serving as Chairman of the Parents and Friends Committee for the Exeter Academy Endowment Drive.
Henry Marcy writes that he misses the fall football games. Made a business trip to New York in November and planned to attend the Columbia game, but after taking one look at the deluge, decided it was no place for him and returned as quickly as he could to the land of sunshine. He and his wife and children spent last summer at Blowing Rock, N. C., where a convenient golf course across the street added to the enjoyment of his vacation. Arrived back home in West Palm Beach just in time for the two hurricanes. Wants all you tourist Fifteeners to get in touch with him when you arrive in Florida.
Chan Foster would like all classmates in Boston and vicinity, having knowledge or information of any wealthy prospects who might be interested in contributing to the Hopkins Center Fund, to contact him as soon as possible.
